How Have You Found Reading Max Weber?

I post here a prose-poem I wrote this evening about the great thinker Max Weber and my association with his writings since the 1960s. You will have your work cut out for you in reading Weber and in making whatever intellectual links you try to make with his ideas.-Ron Price, Australia
------------------------------------MAX WEBER AND ME--------------

In 1959 the image of the great sociologist Max Weber was decisively challenged by the monumental study Max Weber and German Politics written by Wolfgang Mommsen(1930-2004). This work led to Mommsen’s rise to fame. Mommsen meticulously reconstructed the then held view of Weber and politics. Mommsen continued his study of Weber until his death in 2004. I write this for the small number of readers who might be interested in sociology and for myself: to place Weber in the context of my life, my nearly 70 years.

The counter-attack—and, to some extent, successful recapture of the old image of Weber was led by Talcott Parsons who introduced Max Weber to American sociology. Wolfgang J. Mommsen was one of the foremost Weberian scholars writing in the late 1950s and he remained at the front of studies of Weber all his life. Mommsen has written an average of 9 articles or books each year from 1964 to 2004. –Ron Price with thanks to Max Weber Studies 2005, Department of Applied Social Sciences, London Metropolitan University.

I knew nothing of you, Max, back
in ’59 when I was 15, in grade 10,
in love with at least two girls & a
member of a new Faith that had just(1)
come into town..…I came to know a
little about you--and Parsons---while
studying at the university in my home-
town in the 60s, and I came to know(2)
even more while I taught sociology in
those 1970s to the 2000s...Now that I
have retired I am finally focusing on
your life’s work, well a little-bit,a
century after your death. Max, you(3)
were a wonder, a miracle & a wonder,
arguably our age's greatest thinker!

1 the Baha’i Faith
2 At McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario Talcott Parsons was the focus of my study of sociology in the years 1963-66. Students got ‘into’ Weber via Parsons.
3 Weber died in 1920 at the age of 56.

Mission Control: a new Mac application

A number of pages one can open on a computer screen--for example while browsing, or while writing a book (where each section might be in a different doc file)--can be very large. But working on a desktop overpopulated with windows is likely to be very inconvenient, especially when the screen is small. The application named Mission Control, that comes with Lion, the latest Macintosh operating system, offers two tools for dealing with "too many windows" situations. After learning how to use Mission Control, I decided to summarize what I have learned, in a short introductory User's Guide. How can a retired teacher miss an opportunity to teach? The guide is freely available online at
Feel free to use it in any way you wish. And share what you know about Mission Control. Thank you in advance.

Megalithic Structures From Ancient Civilizations

There are quite a few things on this earth that I just can't wrap my small head around, one of them is how ancient civilizations created such great structures, some of these dated many many thousands of years old.

A few vague examples:

Stones weighing well over 10 tons moved from miles away.
Stones so hard that today we would need diamond to cut them.
Heavy stones moved up mountain sides and even cliffs.
The precision used by some of these ancient cultures, baffles the mind. (there is one fairly large Egyptian sculpture, each side of the face is a mirror image of the other, exact to todays machine perfection)
Stones that leave evidence that they were once molten rock put into place to harden to form certain structures.
Megalithic "very ancient" structures hidden beneath the sea all over the world. (question is not why they are under the sea, the question is how old they are given the timeline of human civilization and the tools we had to work with during those periods of time.)

How is it such large structures can be built with such great precision without the use of modern machinery?

I ask these questions because I can't understand where these ancient peoples got this intelligence from. Never any blueprints left behind, never any plans (that I have heard of). It seems to me that creating such structures and sculptures would need a plan that was not only written (on stone or paper), but also copied. Where did they get the mathematics from to create such things, and a better question for that is, is there any evidence of any advanced mathematics being used other than the structures they left behind. Some of these civilizations are so old, the timeline puts them right out of "gathering" mode.

These questions also lead me to another question I have been dying to ask:

Many of the sites that these structures are built on, also reflect to the skies above, most notably is the Orion Belt. My question here is, how did these ancient civilizations get their knowledge of the skies in such great detail with the naked eye (well before the telescope), the best example I can think of on this subject is the Mayan Calendar.

Looking forward to seeing your responses and theory's.

Evaporation Of A Black Hole

Hi, new here still, been doing some reading about black holes here and what you all have to say about them. One question popped up for me while reading about black holes and the event horizon paradox stuff.

If a black hole evaporates, where does its mass go?

Say for example our own galaxies black hole, once it is done eating up everything it can in our galaxy, science says it will start to evaporate correct...but where will the mass go?
This black hole will contain so many elements, what happens to these elements? Are these elements all fused into something that slowly turns into nothing?

I have no schooling past high school, so all I can go on are theory's of my own. I once came up with an idea that mass had a limit, the same way speed has a limit and cold has a limit. The theory is that once an objects mass reaches this limit, it either explodes or disintegrates, I just cant choose what works best for the theory, but I am also fairly certain that the theory is incorrect, so that makes it irrelevant.

Thanks and looking forward to your replies.

Parade Of Colored Revolutions. Who Is The Next?

Democracy. Throughout the history this word leads people to strike for freedom and their rights. Revolutions, rallies, riots, wars are shaking the world. STOP! Human beings are not brutal by their nature, then how did we come down to it? Isn't there anybody benefiting from keeping masses on a short leash? They are puppeteers playing a game called "organize a colored revolution, lead the crowd, and rule the country the way you want". They utilize simple, yet powerful rule, "The easiest way to manipulate people is by playing on their emotions." They oppress and blacken anyone trying to expose them, because it's easier to manipulate unaware, unorganized crowd. This is the current situation worldwide. Don't you care that this much talked-about "democracy" prove its values at the cost of people's lives?

Where Do Our Rights Come From?

i once read this questionare that asked:
"what right does the second ammendment of the u.s. constitution grant?"
my responce was that, the second ammendment lists the right to bear arms but doesn't acutually grant the right.
the right to bear arms would exist even if there was no second ammendment.
of course that then begs the question, where exactly do our rights come from?
my argument is this: there are two types of rights. explicit and implicit.
our explicit rights come from the laws of logic aplied to a just society.
our implicit rights are derived from the explicit ones.
as a few examples...
if we desire a just society, then we have the explicit right not to commit murder.
from this explicit right, we have the implicit right to life, as well as the implicit right to self defence.
if we desire a just society, then we have the explicit right not to steal.
from this explicit right, we have the implicit right to property.
if we desire a just society, then we have the explicit right not to enslave.
from this right, we have the implicit right to liberty.
and so on.

Lets say a giant star has several planets in it's broad life zone, would it be ethical to terraform these planets and colonize them even if we knew the star was going to blow up in a couple million years, such a broad life zone might be tempting...

When was the last time you looked around and asked yourself, "Is there anything I don't know about this life in general?" If something is invisible, it does not mean it does not exist. Think about high-frequency current, radio and TV waives..... Human body and our brains also emit electromagnetic waves, but classical science denies this fact. Do you know why? Who possess information, possesses the world. But if you want to survive in this fast changing world, you need to know some key principles of bioenergetics. What is a soul of a man? Why does our life depend on the sun? How to protect yourself from such phenomenon like rural magic. What kind of effect does a prayer have on people?

The Truth Concerning The Untruth

The Truth Concerning the Untruth

Every human who has looked out at the night sky and who understands what a star is has also admitted to themselves that the universe is immense, possibly without end, and that in all the cosmos there could never exist a magic mythical being that created everything. The idea in and of itself is preposterous. To believe in a theory or concept that could never be proven is beyond unethical, but is at its core, a diabolical contrivance and a perversion of the thought processes, medieval and primitive, and ignorantly dismissive of all modern, developed, and logic based thinking.
To deny the truth is in itself a lie. We who have ever claimed faith in god at all know in our deepest thoughts that we only do so primarily to please our families and piers, fearful and sometimes self righteous, we dare not admit our true feelings to those we trust and love or those we believe we need for sustenance and validation. We know to do so would expose us to ridicule, pious judgment, and condemnation.
As we observe the cosmos through a telescope and our sense of wonder and amazement awakens, we cannot deny the innermost instinct of knowing we humans are not alone in this the Stelliferous Age, armed with the secure knowledge that the existence of intelligent life is mathematically and axiomatically assured, we are sure to feel self consciously foolish for ever doubting science at all, and sheepish for not giving credit where credit is due.
To those we owe true reverence and gratitude; the scholars of science and engineering, the aviators, the global explorers, the adventurers, the social revolutionaries, and astronauts who paved our way to the knowledge, democracy, and technology of our world today. If you think you need a martyr to justify and make worthy a yoke to bear for yourself and all the world, choose instead to learn from these exceptionally aware folk, who have sacrificed with all their passion and energy, to bring light, prosperity, and scientific enlightenment to our planet. Acknowledge and invest in these intelligent and dedicated stewards, who have at times burned with inspiration as hot and as bright as the stars that illuminate our world.
-Hans Bjelke 01-30-2012

Second Law Of Motion

Below is my latest work in the field of physics. I updated Sir Isaac Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion by replacing force “F” with energy “E”. I call my latest discovery, "Second Law of Motion".

Second Law of Motion

Second Law of Motion states: The acceleration of a body is parallel and directly proportional to the amount of energy applied.

Meaning that energy is the origin by which all things are set in motion.

My mathematical formula for the Second Law of Motion is as follows: “Energy equals mass times acceleration or E=ma.”

The forthcoming election of president in Russia scheduled for March 4, 2012 is already illegitimate. Why? Candidates from parliamentary parties and self-nominee candidates are set in unequal conditions in violation of Constitution. If you are a self-nominee you are to collect 2 million signatures of votes in you support, in......20 days! That is the price of registration you as a candidate. Sounds unrealistic, and it is actually so! That is how unwanted candidates are being sorted out from the election. Or maybe not all of them, if you are an oligarch, like Michael Prokhorov, and have enough money to fabricate those signatures, you are welcome to continue in the election race.

Terra Preta Technology Written In The Glyphs?

Hi all, i stumbled on this site a few weeks ago and loving it

i was reading up on myan mythology and trying to gain insight on their writting. As i understand it, they had a very extensive
written collection until the spaniards decided to burn evrything (: nonetheless...

im gonna make this short cause its late

i just stumbled on this short translation of myan mythology which is:

"Mayan mythology portrays the Gods first creating “Man” out of clay, but this creature was not satisfying to them, so clay-man dissolved and crumbled away. The Mayan gods then created a being of wood which had no soul; thus, this “wood-manly-being” had no recollection of its creators; so the gods had it burn. Then the Maya Gods and Deities chose to form a third kind of man, this time from corn and they were pleased; therefore, ancient Mayas believed, as many do today, to be the son’s of maize."

After reading that i began thinking about religion and postulated that knowledge must procede religion, and that religion iether proliferates as
a way of remembering societal knowledge or it develops as an attempt to fill in the gaps of societal knowledge...

regardless even if the only remnants of ancient myan writting is dogmatic i still believe that the instrustion to creating terra preta and more importantly their knowlewdge of agriculture in general, can
be found my teasing out the tidbits of knowledge wrapped in the dogma.

if one takes the authors translation it can be easy to simply assume it is devoid of scientific knowledge however the translation may be impricise or perhaps the script evolved from a different interpretation. This could be a starting discription for how the myans made terra preta.

while reading up on how the spanish so arrogantly destroyed the ancient writtings has me thinking that i think we still have a sense of bias (like the spaniards had )that our current technological knowledge is superior to anything that an older civilization or conquered civ may have possesed. So even though much of (from my understanding) the translations portray dogmatic beleifs i think it would be important to look past the dogma

i also stumbled on a glyph http://spywriter.wordpress.com/2010/03/09/ancient-literary-treasure/ which i believe is an instruction set for a perticular task. i read something along the lines that they had an alphabet but they also had glyphs that told storys, why wouldn't they have had glyphs or pictures that would also help say a lower level worker remember a perticular system or a set of tasks?

i've read all the threads and im still surprised that noone here seems to have taken an interest in what is left of the glyphs, calenders ect.

i was wondering, is there an issue of installing a gamma knife and a mri machine?

therefore making it cheaper and more availible to patients who need it, and make it more availible to those with specific insurance issues?
