Could this be a part from an old satellite or some other piece of space debris that made it's way back down to Earth? The article doesn't tell us at what angle it hit the roof, how high the roof is, or what kind of metal it is. ABC News reporting is very poor even with bubblegum stories like this, very sad.

I personally think the most plausible explanation came from one of the bloggers:
Being from Louisiana and having worked in the oil field, I would guess that the metal piece is part of a broken drill pipe or “pig” to clean a pipeline. Oil field machinery, oil & gas wells, and pipelines can shoot a 5 pound piece of drill pipe or a pig like a cannon for God knows how far. I have seen thing shoot up accidently so high that they went out of sight. A gas or oil well not shut properly can “kick” when open and shoot out whatever is in the well casing; 5 pound piece of broken pipe with a 15,000 pound “kick” in a 30 inch pipe from 500 feet underground is going to fly more than a couple of miles.
I don't think it's a drill pipe because they are perfectly round whereas this looks more oval-shaped, which might be part of the 'pig' apparatus (lower part):

I wonder if there are oil rigs a few miles away!
