Topics I've Started

  1. Hot Air: Why don’t TV weathermen believe in climate change?

    13 January 2010 - 05:26 AM

Are the people who stand in front of a green screen, smile, and wave their arms to indicate upcoming changes in the weather really qualified to write or speak about human-influenced climate change?

  2. Massive iceberg spotted off Australia

    12 December 2009 - 11:10 PM

An iceberg twice the size of Manhattan discovered 1,700 kilometres off the coast of Australia has prompted a shipping alert.

  3. [Q] Virus scare

    04 December 2009 - 10:21 AM

I just got this in an email. Like the person who forwarded it to me, I'll ask, "Is there anything to this?" (I left out some of the cyber-hyperventilation at the end.)

    Quote

HUGE VIRUS COMING! PLEASE READ & FORWARD! Hi All, I checked with Norton

Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus! I checked Snopes, and it is for real. Get

this E-mail message sent around to all your contacts ASAP. PLEASE FORWARD THIS

WARNING AMONG YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS! You should be alert during

the next few days. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled

    'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK'
, regardless of who sent it to

you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C

drive of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail

address on his/her contact list. That is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all

your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and

open it! If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even if it is sent to you by a friend, do

not open it! Shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by

CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was

discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus

simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

    Thanks.

  4. Off-grid power sources

    22 November 2009 - 10:24 AM

I've become occasionally obsessed with the simplicity, functionality, and directness of things like having a windmill to power your pump on the prairie or a water wheel to power your grain mill. Of course, I grew up on a farm powering a pump with my arms and delivering the water to the house with my feet, and similarly using my limbs to deliver tree limbs to heat the house.

We've probably moved beyond that kind of application, unfortunately, (I loved doing chores) but are there similar, more modern alternatives to getting all your energy from somebody else, simple things like passive solar? And how about things that you can build yourself?

    Suggestions?

    Thanks.

  5. Faith in Religion

    09 November 2009 - 07:53 PM

    What happened to faith-based religion?

If you have faith, why do you nead Creation Science? Aren't faith and its informing beliefs much better than a human-designed system based on scientific observation?

When I was 12 and trying to decide if I was going to be a minister, I started reading books on religion. They led me to books on philosophy, which led to sociology, psychology, and political science as ways of getting things done in the world. Of course, in the meantime, I had discovered I could write, so I started creating things other people would have to read.

I noticed something in my reading, something I hadn't found the words for it until now, that science was not included in the study of theology, any more than theology was included in the study of science.

Faith is the basis of Western religion. Has that religion lost its faith? Or is it now placing its faith in a substitute for science--attempting to replace a discipline so different as to pose no threat to faith in God?

I lived on Neptune Drive, the south side of town. I was the last house on the west side of Neptune, north end of the street. I was behind the Kia dealer on College. The houses there were built in 1974 or so (It is the old/new part of town). I loved Fort Collins, but it has probably changed almost beyond recognition in the last 5 years.

Greetings! I've been meaning to mention to you in response to a casual remark in one of your posts that you are not altogether alone in your study of Blake. Mine wasn't post-grad but was fairly intensive and thorough as well as fascinating, especially after having switched majors from Engineering to English Lit. just so I could fit in those really tasty courses. Nice to know someone else here has a Lit background that also loves Science.

Hypography?

Hypography [n.]: A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" - ie, a list of links to electronic documents. Comparable to discography and bibliography, but not cartography.

When we launched in May 2000, we wanted to create a site to share science-related content of all kinds on the web. As time passed, our site turned into a pure science forum with lots of cool people.

So we kept the name Hypography and the cool science forum community - and aim to be a friendly place for discussion of science topics of all kinds.
