  1. Refridgerator Efficiency?

    22 August 2011 - 08:14 PM

Hey all. I am looking for some help with what is probably a simple question, but it is vexing me.
I want to buy a very efficient refridgerator. The 'energy star' ratings in the US, as I understand it, calculate the power a refridgerator uses based on plugging it in for a year. Nother about how often it is opened, etc.

So, my question is, if one refridgerator has a smaller door which is opened 10 times a day, with a larger door that is opened 6 times a day, is that more efficient than a refridgerator in which the only door is opened 16 times a day?

The refridgerators I am looking at are the
    Samsung RF4287HARS and Liebherr CCS2062 (562 and 452Kwh respectively).

I suspect that if the smaller 'drawer' in the Samsung is used most often, the energy saved from not warming up the fridge as much will overcome the difference (over a year). However, I find no way to quantify this yet?

Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
  2. "Pete'sPlace" blog and other global warming skepticism websites

    25 January 2010 - 08:29 AM

Feel free to start a thread on any aspect you would like to debate.
As this thread is designated as a storehouse for information about resources/data I would request you edit your post to include just such data.
The 'environmental studies' forum is probably the best suited to a discussion such as you are looking for.
  3. Astrophotography anyone?

    30 May 2009 - 11:09 AM

    Is anyone into astrophotography?
I am diving into it myself, and was wondering if I could pick up any pointers from forum members with experience with it.
  4. Plug in hybrids for the WIN!

    02 September 2008 - 09:09 AM

All right, I just have to say I am really very very excited!
On Friday I picked up my Prius after getting a Plug in conversion.
Basically they installed a 5.4 kw Lithium battery which charges the Prius built in battery when it gets drained of power.
I can no longer track my mileage on the vehicles dash as the dash reading maxes out at 99.9mpg!
    I love this:)
    It is great for:
    National Security
    The environment (smog and such)
GW (electricity is cleaner than oil).

I should have a device which will enable me to track the fuel efficiency above 100mpg soon and will be happy to give anyone more details once that arrives if there is interest.
I hope the auto-makers can implement these PHEVs soon. In the long term a PHEV will still be a good option for some people. For most though I still think full EVs are the way to go.

Please note, PHEVs will give very different efficiencies depending upon distance driven between charges and style of driving.
My wife's work allows her to charge there. I expect this will change once PHEVs become more common though.
  5. Faith over medicine?

    28 March 2008 - 05:20 AM

I am not sure if this should go in another forum, please feel free to move it.
I also apologize for any ranting, however I really need to get this out as this sort of thing always crushes me when I hear of it.

    Why?!?:eek2:
Why do people allow their children to die when it is soooo easy to prevent?
The source of my angst is this story: Parents' Prayers Could Not Save Daughter, Investigation Launched Into 11-Year-Old's Death From Treatable Diabetic Condition - CBS News

A young girl dies from ketoacidosis. She was diabetic, aparently was not taking insulin, and died from high blood sugar.

Part of the reason this hits me so hard is I have been diabetic since I was 14 months old. I thank god (ironic isn't it) that my parents had the sense to take advantage of modern medicine to allow me to live.
I know how awful high blood sugar feels and I am pretty sure I have a good idea of how this poor girl felt in the last few days of her life.

WHY do these type of people DO this!
Do they refuse to eat because God will take care of their nutrition?

Sorry, I'll come back when I am a little more composed:'(

Hypography?

Hypography [n.]: A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" - ie, a list of links to electronic documents. Comparable to discography and bibliography, but not cartography.

When we launched in May 2000, we wanted to create a site to share science-related content of all kinds on the web. As time passed, our site turned into a pure science forum with lots of cool people.

So we kept the name Hypography and the cool science forum community - and aim to be a friendly place for discussion of science topics of all kinds.
