    I to am having trouble too, I can't post any where!!! HELP!!! I get to this screen trying to post here, my start screen is way diferant IE:no drop down or navigation, this was a new thread or I could not have opened this one. I saved a screen shot so you can see -- but I can't acess the dropdown to post (I can't even get to my user info or my pics?? tryed loging off and back on, but all I get is a blank screen?? untill I reload

    . First of all potting soil is not a good idea, when you use plants to filter water in that manner you should use gravel. Soil releases much in the way of potential pollutants into the water. (the smell and foam is indicative of this) Plants will root in gravel and the water can freely flow through it. Generally I use an under the aquarium sump with an over flow to the sump and a pump from the sump back to the aquarium. I grow some sort of aggressive growing plant in the sump, water sprite, a floating fern, is very good. Azolla is good as well. a floating plant is easier to grow than under water plants and easier to light since the light doesn't have to penetrate the water to grow the plants. Thinning the plants periodically removes Carbon and nitrogen from the water. My fav for ease of growing and speed and growing and absorbing pollutants from the water is Azolla carolinias. I try to use a sump with at least 50% of the surface area of the main aquarium.

    Hey Mr Moon Hopin you perhaps can help me I'm trying to setup a natural filtered turtle tank....I have grass and moss growing in there right now.....but....the water is foaming as it exits my HOT Magnum and it smells a bit right now I'm replacing 75% of the water every week...The pump is pulling the water through potting soil and gravel then recirculating back into the tank through more gravel....any Ideas on how I can get er to not stink so much and how to get er to stop foaming the water?
