Topics I've Started

  1. Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer

    09 March 2010 - 07:46 PM

A spoof on movies/movie trailers and their predictable plot and format.

YouTube - Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer
  2. 5-Second Films

    02 February 2010 - 04:41 PM

    5secondfilms.com

These guys post a new video every day. The catch? Each video is only five seconds long.
They're incredibly ridiculous, but I've watched every single one, and I find myself laughing out loud quite frequently.

    One of my favorites:
    5-Second Films | Robodog
  3. Culture Shock

    10 July 2009 - 02:08 AM

What are some surprising things you've noticed when visiting another country (the people, or the country itself)?
For instance, in many places in Europe, I'm shocked by the smallness of the roads and cars compared to America.

An interesting article on tourists that I read today: BBC NEWS | Europe | 'Rude' French are worst tourists

So what's something shocking about another country you've noticed on your travels?
  4. Poppies

    08 July 2009 - 12:00 PM

Does anyone here grow poppies? What variety?

I was looking into buying opium poppy seeds (Papaver somniferum), but question the legality. Wikipedia says that the plants are illegal (schedule II under the DEA) but their possession is often not enforced in home gardens. I ask not because I want opium, I just really like the way they look. B)

So can you buy seeds? They're obviously available for use in food.
  5. Iodination Help

    03 July 2009 - 03:10 PM

    I need to synthesize 4-iodoresorcinol (a).
This should be simple, but it hasn't been. My first inclination was to simply iodinate resorcinol (:singer:, but I've never done an iodination before. I have only performed chloro and bromo halogenations previously, and since I wanted to maximize yield, I didn't want to deal with the diiodo moiety.

So, I decided to use a procedure that has worked for me in the past (with bromination), using 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid ©. I used Iodine monochloride (1 equivalent), quenched, and decarboxylated. But either the iodination failed, or something went wrong during decarboxylation.

    Any ideas?

Does that chemical diagram in your avatar represent a REAL molecule that actually exists or can be made in the lab? What's its name?

got your prussian blue message, but can't figure out how to reply to it. anyway, been going through old stuff too & trying to decide how to get rid of some of it so i better pass on the addition. lol i'm about ready to just throw those 2 volumes of fuller's synergetics in the recycle & be done with them too.

it's fascinating! :thumbs_up i appreciate your taking time to expalin some of it to me as i never pursued its study to a satisfactory degree. not that i'm ever satisfied of course. ;) just updated myself on your updates & sounds like you'll be spending a lot of time in the lab. can you wear shorts in there? plaid is big this year i think. :rotfl: do they make a black plaid? well, thanks for the knowledge & the outland view. :turtle: :clue: :)

"photoswitchable catalysts" :D What an interesting research topic! When I was 15 I worked in the art dept. of a screen printing company, and it became a hobby of mine to try and convert the photosensitive [-]emulation[/-] [edit: emulsion... fracking spell checker] into a photosensitive adhesive (something that I'd never heard of at the time, but thought it would be really cool). I never did get anywhere with it. I will be following your blog with interest, and would love to hear about the research :) ... if it wouldn't be revealing any trade secrets ;)

mmmm... so does that mean you can turn a reaction off by turning on light, as well as turn a reaction on by turning on light? or is that what you aim to find out? :smart: anyway, bon voyage! :airplane:

Hypography?

Hypography [n.]: A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" - ie, a list of links to electronic documents. Comparable to discography and bibliography, but not cartography.

When we launched in May 2000, we wanted to create a site to share science-related content of all kinds on the web. As time passed, our site turned into a pure science forum with lots of cool people.

So we kept the name Hypography and the cool science forum community - and aim to be a friendly place for discussion of science topics of all kinds.
