Topics I've Started

  1. Happy start to a new series of dates tracking the earths passage thu space

    31 December 2004 - 06:18 AM

Ah ya, like New Years and stuff.

To all my Hypog friends and aquaintences, lurkers and posters alike.

May the time period marked off by the latest version of the Gregorian calendar result in mutually benefitial interactions and positive results for you and yours.
  2. Cure Disease, save lives/ Or flush the toilet (Stem Cells)

    10 November 2004 - 08:58 AM

OK, in an effort to move elements of the Election debockel into seperate threads, here is one on Stem Cell Research.

Embryo's are created continually in fertilization clinics. Some small percent are transplanted to wombs. The rest are eventually disposed of rather than being allowed to use them for the most potentially benefitial medical research we have ever known!

There has not been a single valic reason given for this morally abhorant attack on humanity other than unsubstantiated religious mumbo jumbo. None of them hold up under even the slightest evaluation.

So instead of finding cures, we flush these unwanted embryos down the toilet.
  3. Death with Dignity Debate

    30 September 2004 - 09:55 AM

A few days ago the Florida Supreme Court issued a decision stating the recently passed "Terri's Law" is unConstitutional. The most recent ruling was based not on the issue itself (Right to Life), but on whether the Legislature had the right to pass a law which intentionally allows the Executive Office in Florida to ignore a previous Judicial ruling. But let's discuss the Right To Life/ Death with Dignity aspects.

Terri has been in a persistent vegetative state for 14 years after suffering heart failure. Her husband states that she would not want to be keep alive like this. But her parents want her body kept mechanically functioning at all costs.

    'Terri's Law' struck down

Especially in light of a new situation in the UK. An infant was born prematurely in October last year weighing just one pound and measuring only five inches. She has stopped breathing 3 times already because of faulty heart and lungs. Dr's expect her to suffer another lung failure with-in the next few months. The Dr's are trying to get court intervention to stop any further efforts to maintian her life as they consider it “futile or cruel” to try to resuscitate her.

IS "life" still "life" if all there is is a physical body with no mental activity? Is there a point at which the "quality of life" is so bad that death is the more humane and ethical alternative? Does LOVE include helping a loved one end their suffering or end artificial existence? Or does LOVE require making every effort to keep the loved one "alive" no matter what?
  4. Are you Internet Addicted?

    23 September 2004 - 08:58 AM

"Internet junkies in chilling cold turkey experiment"

    http://www.theregist...ternet_junkies/

A study sponsored by Yahoo and OMD keep study participants away from their internet connections for 14 days. They found themselves quickly succumbing to "withdrawal and feelings of loss, frustration and disconnectedness". They even had problems finding people that would volunteer for the experiment. People don't want to give up the the Internet for two weeks even for a scientific study.

After many years of highspeed connections on a daily basis I know I have trouble even putting up with dial up connections. Could I give up the Net for two weeks? ERG!

    What about you?
  5. GO PACK!

    14 September 2004 - 04:43 AM

    24 -14! Bret is god!

Hello Freethinker, You and I have never had any exchanges in these threads but I must tell you that your past posts were an inspiration to my joining Hypography back in 2005. I really enjoyed your perspective and your enthusiasm (if you know what I mean). It's good to see your return and I hope you continue to participate. REASON

Hypography?

Hypography [n.]: A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" - ie, a list of links to electronic documents. Comparable to discography and bibliography, but not cartography.

When we launched in May 2000, we wanted to create a site to share science-related content of all kinds on the web. As time passed, our site turned into a pure science forum with lots of cool people.

So we kept the name Hypography and the cool science forum community - and aim to be a friendly place for discussion of science topics of all kinds.
