Craig, its just a voxel engine, uses voxels instead of polygons, there are a few in existence.

It's not, however, entirely unlimited detail, though the name sounds cool, its only limited to the data you have provided it. To build even a simple drop of water on atomic level would require immense amount of data, and ofcourse since it's me, i'll show you just how much data we're talking about:

lets consider that a molecule of water weigs 0.05g, molecular weight of water is 18.015g/mol, so \frac{0.05g}{18.05 g/mol} = 0.00277546489mol and now using this, and the Avogardo's constant, 6.02214179\times10^{23}\frac{particles}{mol} * 0.00277546489mol = 1.67142431007467531\times10^{21}particles

so if we wanted to model 1 drop of water on an atomic level we would need to model 167142431007467531000 molecules of water, each consisting of 1 oxygen, 2 hydrogen atoms, and don't forget about 10 electrons meaning that to keep track on atomic level, you will need to keep track of 2172851603097077903000 points of data

now lets assume that we are keeping a charge for an electron (boolean)
lets also assume that we are keeping atomic weight(double), electron configuration (linked list of ints) and electrons/shell (linked list of ints)

On top of this, we are storing it in an octree

    so roughly:

    electron just has a bool
an atom actually has a double, and 2 linked lists with 2 int overhead and 2 ints per node
octree will have lets say 2 ints as overhead plus 8 ints as pointers to 8 branches, so 8 ints*n +2

    electrons - 1 boolean of data = 1671424310074675310000 * 1 byte = 1671424310074675310000 bytes
    hydrogen - 1 double, 1 list with 1 piece of data (4 ints), and another list with 1 point of data (4 ints) = 334284862014935062000 * (8 bytes + 16 bytes + 16 bytes) = 13371394480597402480000 bytes
    oxygen - 1 double, 1 list with 2 pieces of data (6 ints), another list with 3 points of data (8 ints) = 167142431007467531000 * (8 bytes + 24 byte + 32 bytes) = 10362830722462986922000 bytes

    the octree is 8ints * 4bytes * 167142431007467531000 molecules + 2bytes = 5348557792238960992002 bytes

    so total cheapest estimate is: 1671424310074675310000 bytes + 13371394480597402480000 bytes + 10362830722462986922000 bytes + 5348557792238960992002 bytes = 30754EB (thats exabytes)

lets keep one reference to electron data type, as well as hydrogen as well as oxygen to optimize the data a little bit, so octree mode for a molecule totals 9 ints of data + a little overhead:
    9 ints * 4 bytes * 167142431007467531000 molecules + 2 bytes + 1 byte + 40 bytes + 64 bytes = 6017EB

Which is to say that billions of dollars worth of equipment won't really cover the storage costs here for modeling a simple drop of water on an atomic level, never mind subatomic, or anything bigger and more complex...
  2. In Topic: Please Help Me The Difference Between Computer Science And Information Technology?

    25 August 2011 - 06:18 AM

Having been involved in IT first and more general CS over the past few years.

Neither relates to just software or hardware, neither is just about one or the other, they approach it at different levels.

IT deals with management of a wide variety of technology, main factor for which is data, so anything that manages data, is part of information technology field. Any media, any form of data, visual or not, all of that is encompassed within IT. This may be anything from software installation to hardware, to networking, to software design, to hardware design, to database administration to management and administration of systems and even systems development.

CS is the study of information and computation theory, implementation and application of thereof. It deals with data on the low level and encompasses things such as programming, graphics, algorithm design, AI, programming language design, networking (low-level), cryptography, robotics and much much more.

To sum it up and make it easier to relate to, let me describe this using the OSI model: CS encompasses layer 1-3, where as IT deals with layer 4-7

It wouldn't speed up anything any more than normal light would. Of anything direct sunlight would have more affect on the tape and paper then the scanning head...

You know you are talking to a geek when they tell you that they have upgraded their liveware to version 2.0 and are no longer compatible with sleep.
You know you are talking to a geek when they run an odd number of monitors that are no smaller than 22" across.
You know you are talking to a geek when phrases like "I find your lack of faith disturbing." and "These aren't the droids you're looking for", constantly appear in your conversation.

Yeah i don't work in the IT dep-t, however because I do things that on IT level equate to multiple different "[blank] engineers", i have request that touch things that are dear to the IT, and so they are not too keen to answer. Also they might hate us because we have a sign that says something along the lines of "Lab not subject to IT lab policy"...

Sorry, I've been so busy lately, I haven't had a lot of time for anything, and i have some pictures for you guys (and i gotta send that packet on). Lots of things have happened, first a friend of mine was murdered, then i switched jobs, so i was running around crazy for a month, and now that i am finally starting to settle in here, i can start coming out and playing again :)

Hypography?

Hypography [n.]: A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" - ie, a list of links to electronic documents. Comparable to discography and bibliography, but not cartography.

When we launched in May 2000, we wanted to create a site to share science-related content of all kinds on the web. As time passed, our site turned into a pure science forum with lots of cool people.

So we kept the name Hypography and the cool science forum community - and aim to be a friendly place for discussion of science topics of all kinds.
