Another indication of TX's Retardation
14 November 2005 - 04:37 PM
Last week in the wonderful armpit of the world known as TX.....
They pass a ban on gay marriages and "defined" marriage as only between a man and a woman.
God must really like the backwater morality of TX.... ID is just around the bend... Maybe public stonings are next. -
This is a SCIENCE site!
27 September 2005 - 09:53 AM
While most here are open to ideas and questions from just about any point of view, we must also realize the purpose and nature of this specific site. This is a science site, devoted to the exploration and discussion of scientific ideas. This being said, this is not a soapbox nor a pulpit.
I understand that there are theological theories and implication in some of the topics discussed here and there is a forum that is deadicated to that purpose (The Theology Forum). That being said, I feel that the remaining forums are not the place to continually have such debates.
There are rules for this site and theologically backed statements are not really appropriate in the scientific realm. As a refresher for those that have forgotten or not read them...
The bolded portion have been added by myself. These seem to be the areas in which many posters are having the most problem with. As a moderator, I will be enforcing these rules. Do not be surprise to find a closed thread or a deleted post for failure to comply to the above guidelines.
Science Forums Rules said:
If you make strange claims, please provide proof or at least backup of some kind. If you fail to do so, or the backup you provide is not deemed adequate, the moderators may move your post to the Strange Claims forum.
If you want to refute someone's claims, please stay calm and point out where you think they went wrong, and what kind of proof you base your own opinion on.
Do not post links to other sites as proof of your claims without commenting what the relevant sites say and why they are important to the current discussion.
Statements like "I just know that this is the way it is" (especially when religion is being discussed) are considered ignorant and might be deleted.
If you ask for opinions, respect the replies you get.
It is generally a good idea not to spend all your time in only a few topics.
Do not endlessly show us that *your* theory is the *only* truth. And don't follow this up by making people look stupid for pointing out that there are other answers, especially if they provide links and resources. It will get you banned! -
Electron cloud shapes and quantum leaps...
05 September 2005 - 05:31 PM
I puzzled whether to post here or in the chemistry forum, but the physics forum is a bit more traveled and quantum chemistry stradles the line a bit...
I personally have always been uncomfortable with elctron quantum leaps from one orbital to another, It just seems that things should not ping from one place into another.
Here are my base assumptions and their ramifications...perhaps this is where my error lies and this can be sorted out, but it seems that if I see things as I have, that there may be some ways to explain and alter this paradox.
1. Electron quantum leaps are from one orbital to another. (the next orpital corresponding to either increased or decreased energy).
2. Current electron cloud models are based on probability and on static molecular geometry.
The idea that occured to me, is that as energy is either put inot or removed, these electron cloud shapes could be warped, ie overlap. As the energy neccesary for an electron to assume the general probability in the new orbital, it is back into the "base" state of the orbital likely to be found in the most likely areas acording to current models (Hamiltonian mechanics).
Any major flaws or problems that arise from this... Quantum mechanics has never really been my friend, so I may have some massive oversights...So I thought I would throw out the idea and see what sticks..
Thanks.

Dino's out prior to meteor?
23 August 2005 - 04:26 PM
I was watching an old show on PBS today that was speaking about the extinction of the dino's at the end of the cretaceous.. The model that was pushed up until the end was meteor impact and the evidence at the K-T boundry. There does seem to be evidence of a meteor impact. The question was just brought up near the end of the show, why so many other types of animals survived (frogs were one example, which are EXCEDINGLY prone to ecological problems) and others did not.
IMO it seems that the meteor impact was not as devistating as thought, but just the final nail into a group that wason its last legs anyways (As a whole.. there were very advanced dinos's at the end. But one could look at primates. While there has been much greater diversity in the past, there is little now, but here are humans).
There are a few things that seemed to be going on....
1) Climate change.
2) Dominant plant life shifting from gymnosperms to angiosperms.
3) Massive migratory paterns into new areas (transmission of indigenous disseases)
Any ideas...comments?
I'm just trying to look a little deeper into an event that seems to be blamed on one cause, but it doesn't really describe the outcome that we have... -
Who cares what Jefferson thought?
04 August 2005 - 07:06 AM
In the US many arguments arise concerning the constitutionaliy of something or another. One point that usually is brought up is the orginal intent of the authors and ratifiers. In specific instances this makes some sense, in other absolutly none. This document was written by people with individual flaws and perspectives. They did not see it neccessary to ban slavery. So why do does it matter what Madison or Jefferson thought about something? They had no concept of what we would be facing today and their POV on certain issues is definately antiquated.
Just a though...
