Topics I've Started

  1. The 1/89 lemma

Gosh darn it I leave the room for two seconds!

I've been thinking about the interesting fact that 1/89 generates the sequence of Fib numbers distributed over negative powers of ten, at least when expressed in BASE ten. I'm wondering whether other sister series, such as the Lucas, can be similarly distributed, say, over negative powers of some other number in some other base (I've tried base 10 without success), and also still be a simple fraction in that system. Would this have any relation to the fact that the classical Pascal Triangle's rows give powers of 11 (though expressed in base 10)- the sister Pascal Triangles also give powers of 11 plus increments defined by the 'seeds' of their sides that begin sister Fib series.

the repeating patterns seen in the moduli of fibonacci numbers varies with the divisor, i.e. the base of expression. in one case i found no repeating pattern insofar as i went. i'll have to do some searching here to find my work, but i won't bother unless you ask to see it.
  2. Fungi & Lichens

a place for fungi & lichen photos, links, stories, discoveries, and otherwise related posts. :photos: :read: :clue: :sherlock:

this is a relatively new area for me. i went hiking today to look for flowers but found fungi & lichens instead. here we goes then. :photos:

    lichen definition @ freedictionary.com
[quote]1. (Life Sciences) an organism that is formed by the symbiotic association of a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium and occurs as crusty patches or bushy growths on tree trunks, bare ground, etc. Lichens are now classified as a phylum of fungi (Mycophycophyta)

  3. Underwater Volcanic Eruption Creates New Island In The Red Sea

    ZUBAIR GROUP Yemen 15.05°N, 42.18°E; summit elev. 191 m

An eruption from the northern part of the Zubair Group continued during 21-27 December. MODIS imagery from NASA's satellites on 22 December showed a plume, possibly containing ash, rising from what was thought to be a submarine eruption. Imagery acquired on 23 December from the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's EO-1 satellite showed a new island at the location with a plume rising from it, roughly 500 m N of Rugged Island and more than 500 m in diameter. The island was not present in a similar image acquired on 24 October 2007.

Geologic Summary. The 5-km-long Jebel Zubair Island is the largest of a group of 10 small islands and submerged shoals that rise from a shallow platform in the Red Sea rift. The platform and eruptive vents forming the islands and shoals are oriented NNW-SSE, parallel to the rift. An early explosive phase was followed by a brief period of marine erosion, and then by renewed explosive activity accompanied by the extrusion of basaltic pahoehoe lava flows. This latest phase of activity occurred on the morphologically youngest islands of Zubair, Centre Peak, Saba, and Haycock. Historical explosive activity was reported from Saddle Island in the 19th century. Spatter cones and pyroclastic cones were erupted along fissures that form the low spine of Zubair Island.

  4. Cern To Announce Higgs @ Lhc

CERN to announce Higgs boson observation at LHC @ extremetech.com

Tomorrow, at 9am EST, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland are expected to announce, with fairly strong certainty, that they have observed the Higgs boson “God” particle at a mass-energy of 125 GeV.

For just over a week, rumors have been rife that observations with 2.5 to 3.5 sigma certainty (96% to 99.9%) have been made. For it to be declared an actual discovery, however, a sigma level of five has to be recorded. A score on the higher end of the range, towards 3.5, would definitely have particle physicists, engineers, scientists, and philosophers jumping around excitedly, though. Perhaps more importantly, LHC has two detectors at the end of its 17-mile-long particle acceleration tunnel, and both have reportedly seen the Higgs boson: the CMS detector with sigma 2.5, and ATLAS with sigma 3.5. Thanks to the matching observations, “we’re moving very close to a conclusion in the first few months of next year,” said Oliver Buchmeuller, a senior member of the CMS detector team.

  5. Spammers @ Hypography

    26 November 2011 - 12:09 PM

over the last 5 days hypog has added 179 new members...all spammers. :omg: what gives? i see when looking at their profiles many are listed as banned; is this automatic somehow? is this hurting our forum, or do we benefit by having more members on our board even if they are banned?

besides that bit of rubbish, i see many spammers are getting their links up on our page by adding them as comments to members posting Status Updates on the sidebar. again, what gives? i seem to have lost the ability/permission to report these posts; is that a glitch or was it an admin action?

enquiring minds want to know.

Hypography?

Hypography [n.]: A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" - ie, a list of links to electronic documents. Comparable to discography and bibliography, but not cartography.

When we launched in May 2000, we wanted to create a site to share science-related content of all kinds on the web. As time passed, our site turned into a pure science forum with lots of cool people.

So we kept the name Hypography and the cool science forum community - and aim to be a friendly place for discussion of science topics of all kinds.
