Topics I've Started

  1. The Annular Solar Eclipse 20Th May 2012

    23 May 2012 - 01:19 AM

As I'm sure everyone was aware, on Sunday part of the western coast of the united states got to experience an annular eclipse - which was also my first eclipse :)

We drove a few hours north to extend 'annularity' to a full 2 minutes. Giving me just enough time to setup - and do a rough align (need to practice more day aligning :\ ). Fortunately I got lucky and the scope only required a nudge every 10 mins or so. With the eclipse finishing at Sunset, the diminishing light meant I had to extend the exposure from about 1/640 to 1/80 and double the ISO... Unfortunately this means the colours change a little throughout the video, as I haven't got the time to spend tweaking the ~1000 RAWs manually (if anyone knows of program that may help with this please let me know!).

    Equipment used:
    Canon 500D
    Skywatcher 100ED
    Celestron CG5 mount
Thousand Oaks type 2+ white light solar filter
    Intervalometer

Processed the RAW's in lightroom, wrote a script for mathematica to align the frames and pieced it together with ffmpeg:

Below I have attached my favourite frame, thanks for looking!

  2. A New Type Of Engine

    08 April 2011 - 04:11 PM

This is an amazing innovation, and if they can produce a full sized working prototype vehicle from it, it will revolutionise the auto industry

Lets hope they can, for all our sakes, I wouldnt mind paying 1/10th my current petrol bill!
  3. Amazing Iss Footage, From The Ground!

    13 March 2011 - 04:37 PM

Check out the video and pictures in the following link, taken in Germany during Discovery's last mission.

  4. Nasa Scientist Claims To Have Found Extraterrestrial Bacteria

    06 March 2011 - 01:52 AM

Dr. Hoover has discovered evidence of microfossils similar to Cyanobacteria, in freshly fractured slices of the interior surfaces of the Alais, Ivuna, and Orgueil CI1 carbonaceous meteorites. Based on Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and other measures, Dr. Hoover has concluded they are indigenous to these meteors and are similar to trichomic cyanobacteria and other trichomic prokaryotes such as filamentous sulfur bacteria. He concludes these fossilized bacteria are not Earthly contaminants but are the fossilized remains of living organisms which lived in the parent bodies of these meteors, e.g. comets, moons, and other astral bodies. The implications are that life is everywhere, and that life on Earth may have come from other planets.

Members of the Scientific community were invited to analyze the results and to write critical commentaries or to speculate about the implications. These commentaries will be published on March 7 through March 10, 2011.

  5. Positron Capture

    12 October 2010 - 09:23 PM

Since I cant find any references about it, it seems that the process of a neutron capturing a positron is impossible. I assume this could precede through a u-channel W boson and the anti-neutrino could carry off the excess energy..

Is this possible, if not why not?

things are generally good. fire smoke and marine clouds and too-small of binoculars have kept me from seeing the new supernova though. have you looked at it yet?
the non-figurate (non-polygonal) numbers thread is still going strong. lot's of new propositions and a few proofs & some exciting new maps. :) you graduating soon? over...

You can now use the "Watch this forum" and "Wach this topic" above each forum or topic. It is then displayed on the front page right column. Probably somewhere else too... :)

Hypography?

Hypography [n.]: A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" - ie, a list of links to electronic documents. Comparable to discography and bibliography, but not cartography.

When we launched in May 2000, we wanted to create a site to share science-related content of all kinds on the web. As time passed, our site turned into a pure science forum with lots of cool people.

So we kept the name Hypography and the cool science forum community - and aim to be a friendly place for discussion of science topics of all kinds.
