Sacri Sankt Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 does anyone else listen to glass or other modern classical composers? i find his music almost hypnotic, conjouring images of industry, modern society and a kind of fatalistic, nihilistic undercurrent. the only more interesting music ive heard is some of the more cerebral electronic music, and some of the great master's canons and fugues. Queso Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 Yeah....oh my god. His music is a mathematical fractal universe that just spews from the depths of complexity. Every single one of his pieces is so far out there, and beautiful. I have visions of everything connecting, my brain follows along and counts 1234123 12341234 123123123123123123123 zoooooooom he's so insane. have you heard his work he did with ravi shankar?it's unbelievable! Queso Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 Also...the way he ascends and descends scales in the background with those high pitched keyboard tones is so mesmerizing... like gridwork, or the opening of new wings, fingers. Quote
Sacri Sankt Posted February 11, 2007 Author Report Posted February 11, 2007 i must confess i didnt understand everything you wrote, but i agree with what i did :) do you find his music very evocative of modern society, or is that just me? Quote
Queso Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Very much so! It sounds like philip glass knows something is happening and you can hear all the sky scrapers creaking . . Quote
dancingbear Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Saw him and his ensemble live in Bilbao, Spain in 2002 and was blown away. Great man, great music. Check out his album "Solo Piano" but don't do it if you're depressed. Its emptiness is beautiful. Quote
Sacri Sankt Posted February 12, 2007 Author Report Posted February 12, 2007 makes me wonder about other composers who encapsulate their era perfectly. mozart, of course. david bowie in the 1970's. jackson in the eighties. i wonder if the eras we find most evocative are the ones with the best zeit-composers?
