Tormod Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Hey guys you are going off topic with on speed train. (Everyone knows laserdiscs are for whimps - real people used Compact Discs since 1985 and never looked back...or forward. :smilingsun:) I've been listening a lot to Norwegian artist Kurt Nilsen lately. Who would have thought that the winner of World Idol a few years ago would turn out to be a *real* artist? He's brilliant IMHO. He went from pop through rock to release a country-inspired album that is honestly the ONLY such I have ever bought. Here's a sample: YouTube - kurt nilsen- Rise to the occasion + Lyrics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Rtvs0BxkNA Quote
Moontanman Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Laserdics are not analog. :smilingsun:By default, anything using a laser is digital (unless converted). Wanna bet? I was very much into Laser Disks at one time. I had the original model with a gas laser. I've had six of the players and have a large collection of disks. The first disks had digital picture but the sound was analog. Digital sound on laser didn't come out until several years after the format was released. I have a couple dozen small video music laser disks and most of them are analog, I even have both versions of some of them. I have Michael Naismith's Elephant Parts on laser, hilarious video album, It's sad the idea of a video music album never really took off. Quote

Moontanman Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Are those U-Tube videos full screen with digital quality sound or they the little grainy movies with tinny sound I see with my windows media player? Quote
freeztar Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 Are those U-Tube videos full screen with digital quality sound or they the little grainy movies with tinny sound I see with my windows media player? The embedded youtube videos are not fullscreen, they actually play right in the same window. You can optionally click on the title to be directed to the video on youtube itself and there you can select fullscreen mode. Some videos are very clear in fullscreen, but most are grainy at that resolution. The audio is reasonable. I'm actually not sure of the audio bitrate or bitdepth, but I find it comparable to 96kbs MP3's. :) Are you on dial up? Quote

I like to own my music and I like for it to be of good quality. I think I'll stick with my Vinyl, Laser Disks, Cd's, and DVDs. Are you on dial up? Yeah, I had to drop broad band about a year ago, had to down size my life somewhat. God but I miss all the science, history, educational and other actual intelligent programing in Cable TV. Broadcast TV sucks mud from the Marianas Trench! Quote
DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 Also Moonman it varies from video to video some are much worse than you describe in your question some are very exceptional and of course how good your pc sounds is another matter. How slow is your dial-up? I used to watch with no real issues other than a bit of a wait at times for the videos to begin. Quote

I never listen to music with my computer anyway, I use a Mitsubishi power amp running two 4 ohm Infinity 1.5 speakers and a JVC turn table. It kinda spoils me I guess for stuff like the tiny speakers in computers. I guess I just can't shake the house and entertain the neighborhood with my computer speakers (that's what my wife says) My dial up is 56k at best, my modem is an old one and very slow in of it's self. iViolet Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 i listen to music on my computer almost exclusively via the iTunes, be it imported music from cds or internet radio. i also prefer to own music, but i like portability just as much lol, i live and breathe :) via my iPod shuffle™. the only drawback to importing music is that it really :) takes up a lot (18 gigs) of hard drive space. i'm currently scrobbling a live version of: honky tonk women by the rolling stones Quote

Unfortunately, I don't have a record player right now (the Pioneer my dad gave me from 1972 finally died), but I still have crates full of classic records. :) I listen to music almost exclusively digitally these days. For casual, everyday listening, I use Rhapsody and my cheapo computer speakers. When I create music, or really want to hear everything going on, I move to my "studio" and listen through my nearfield monitors. I have a pair of active Samson 6.5" woofers, plus two tweeters each. They sound like a slice of heaven. Ironically, I once ripped a vinyl album to MP3 and listened to it for years that way. It's always cool to put a cd in the player and hear the record crackles. :) Well, actually, here's the ironic part. I later purchased the cd version. When I listened to them side by side, there was no comparison. The vinyl ripped (MP3 nonetheless) version sounded better than the straight off the shelf cd version. Vinyl is still better than digital, even after it has been converted to digital! :) Do you consider yourself an audiophile MTM? Quote
