I worked as a labourer with a few 'chippies' last summer, they basically first did a course at what we call TAFE (a type of tertiary education) and then got an apprenticeship with a carpenter.

Alternately, I have a friend with no formal vocational training (though a lot of on-the-job day labor experience), who got a job as a resident custodian for an apartment complex. After a few years of this, he began to get pretty good jobs self-contracting himself to people who heard about him thought word-of-mouth. This sort of person can be great for small, non-time-critical jobs that require a bit of everything, like adding a room with wiring and plumbing, since he’s able to do carpentry, wiring, and plumbing.

Social connections can help a lot in the trades. My friend gets a lot of business thorough people he knows through music and social scenes – I’d guess that, like me, he’s socially acquainted with a couple of hundred people, who mention him to people they know, etc.
