Leila Night Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Population rise is due to having more kids than you shouldActually, modern science is the cause of the large rise in human population (=])... -People live longer-Children survive infancy and the first five years-Health care is increasingly improving, etc. (I think the only way we can effectively 'control' the birthrate is to change the perceptions of people and encourage birth control... advocating abortion is too tricky considering people relate their religious beliefs to their sense of self, IMO) Quote
HydrogenBond Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 It is ironical that when one applies the genetic and selective advantage arguments of evolution to people it doesn't apply that well. In the world of culture, people who attain the highest ideals, and have selective advantages in culture, don't always breed progressively, as Buffy pointed out. So either the main assumption of evolutionary theory is wrong, does not apply to human, or humans are set ideals that don't define selective advantage. Quote

The only confusion here comes when you try to impose your own idea of how you think evolution *should* work on the process. The point that several of us have been trying to make is that selective breeding does not work in the long term. You can get a dog that looks like a German Shepard, but most of them will have bad hips. You can get tomatoes that transport well, but they'll taste awful. Random interbreeding across the entire gene pool definitely favors survival, not selection of "superior traits" as you seem to want to be the truth. Naturally curly haired,Buffy Quote
