lugger Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 I'm looking for an explaination of a recently observed phenomenon. I arrived home last Saturday night at 11:45 with my partner. As we pulled into the drive we both jumped as a blue light flashed from behind. My girlfiend compared it at the time to a camera or speed camera flash, but blue. We waited and looked to our right, toward a streetlight at the end of the road around 5 metres away. The flash happened again, slightly longer this time. It reflected in the house next to the street light, but the street light remained orange. I considered after it was as if someone was welding nearby (I live in a cul-de-sac where the average age is 60, so assume this was not the case at quater to midnight!) There then followed a buzzing noise of electricity, which sounded as if it were coming from over head pylons, of which there are none. There are no over head cables on our cul-de-sac, the nearest are beyond the bungalow opposite, approximately 20 metres away. We waited in the car. No one was near by that we could see, and no further lights/ noises were seen/ heard. The weather was dry, there were no reports of lightening that night, and no sound of thunder. Just wondered if any one could suggest a non-extra terrestrial logical explaination what it might have been. Thanks! Quote
freeztar Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 This is a wild guess, but a powerful surge in electricity can cause the lights to blink blue as they are overheated and blown. A wire that is blown away from its connector by such a force has the potential to wriggle around until it falls limp, creating a buzzing noise as it does so. Perhaps the power line behind your neighbor's house took a surge it couldn't handle. It doesn't really account for the sound coming from overhead, but sound travels in strange ways sometimes. Weird stuff... Quote
