sanctus Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I tried to install wireless on my new Linux OS and it didn't work, so I bought a cable. Now it works, but it is much slower than wireless on windows while it is supposed to be quicker... Someone told me that the first thing to check is the cable as usually the problem comes from there. he said there are different qualities of the cables (wires twisted inside or not etc...). But he did not remember, how the classification went: I have CAT 5e cable is this a good one or shall I look for a lower category cable? Quote
Zythryn Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Cat 5e is pretty darn good.I am not a cable guru, however I think it is second only to cat 6 until you break out the optical cable.I know nothing of Linux, however, most/all network cards have a 10/100 setting. This is typically automatic, but you may want to check and see if you can find the settings for the speed. If it is set to 10Mbs, switch it to 100 and you should be good:) Quote
Zythryn Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Or, if you have another computer available, try the cable on that one to see if it behaves better? Quote
sanctus Posted March 6, 2007 Author Report Posted March 6, 2007 Thank I'll try with my girlfriends computer. And will look into the settings, when I log on on linux again.. Quote
