IrishEyes Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 YIPPEE!!!Thanks to Tormod and Yvonne, we are going to move the Hypography Convention Europe 2005 to NORTH AMERICA (hence the name change HCE05 to HCNA05). After some discussions with GAHD (geez, that just sounds a little creepy when I read it :) ) , and with Yvonne, we are looking at the following dates/places: May 2005- New York CityApril 2005 - Washington DC No official dates have been set yet, and we'd like to get as many people as possible to attend. Ideally, I'd like to rent a cottage or B&B, where we can hold a get-together (possibly with somebody 'science-y'), and have at least a day where we can tour someplace 'scientific'. Of course, either of the suggested cities also lends itself to either shopping or theater (OR BOTH!!). New York has been suggested as it is central for two of our Moderators, at least one Admin will be able to make it, and a few of our members have locations within driving distance. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. AS this is only a few months away, we need to get planning soon. If we can get at least five members that will agree on a place and a month, then I will start making reservations. Please post your responses here!! Thanks so much!! :) Quote
Tormod Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Well, Yvonne and I will come for sure no matter which date is chosen. We had originally suggested May but looking at our schedules it seems April may be better. It's mostly due to the need to put our daughters in cryogenic storage for two weeks or so (read: find grandparents with time on their hands). One thing though: On May 17 Hypography turns 5. So this would be an excellent opportunity to celebrate! And with these words I am going to bed (its 3:23 am now and I see two monitors and am surprised I can even spel corcetly). Quote
Freethinker Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Not that I am biased at all. But if the Convention and it's members are family oriented, then perhaps one of the top family destinations in the US if not the world: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/WIDELLS.html http://www.dells.com/ http://www.wisdells.com/ Quote
Tormod Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Riiiight. Well, we're not bringing the kids. EDIT: (hit the button too early) Who wants to go to Wisconsin before June? Isn't it like, er, winter, up there? Like ice and cold? *shudder* :) Quote

Freethinker Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Now California! Perhaps San Diego? Quote
Tormod Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Well, never been to San Diego but I've been to most midwestern states. I still think that NY is a great place for the HCNA05. :) Never been there, actually. I have a (long) story about how I and a friend from Denmark went from Rock Island towards New York in a Ford Escort, only to get stranded somewhere in the vicinity of Pittsburgh because the engine started leaking oil...we'll talk about that at the HCNA, okay? Quote
Yvonne Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 I've never been to NY, but I've always wanted to go. I went to Washington DC three or four times when I was in the States. But Tormod and I will find the time to go to NY anyway while we're there. This is really exciting, and we hardly talk about anything else. A couple of my friends also wants to go, so I told them to log on to Hypography! That's were it's happening!!! But we really need to start focus on some dates, as we need to book our tickets! We will stay for about 10 days - I guess the Hcna05 will last a weekend or so?? Does anybody have any preferred dates, should we have a poll, or should someone just decide? ...the wife... Quote
geko Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Hey Tormod/Yvonne, you live in norway, yes? Do you know if it's true that there's a law that says you're not allowed to own only 1 cat because a study was done by some norweigans that indicated that if a cat lives on its own it has high levels of anxiety, so they outlawed having only 1 cat in the house? It sounds daft, and i didnt bother with google, as i thought as im here ill just ask Quote

IrishEyes Posted December 31, 2004 Author Report Posted December 31, 2004 Does anybody have any preferred dates, should we have a poll, or should someone just decide? Executive decision usually works best in cases like... well, in ANY case, really! :) Seriously though, if your parents can watch the kids during the weekend of the 13-15, we can meet in NY then. That would (almost) coincide with Hypo's birthday. However, that IS Mother's Day weekend. Not a problem forme, as we'll probably make a week-long trip out of this anyhow. BUt not sure how Yvonne feels about that, and not sure how willing some of our Mods moms will be to let their young ones loose in the Big Apple that weekend either. Alexander said he can probaably make it, and Tim also. GAHD is a maybe. I will be there for sure. Tormod and Yvonne are both for sure. Any others? Quote

Freethinker Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Seriously though. I do not see the facination with NYC. Unless we are timing it for some specific happenings/ plays/ other local event. Costs and activities would seem much better at other locations. Vegas? If we are going to be non-kids. But some of the younger members may have trouble with parents? DC? For the younger members from other countries, this might be their only chance. Or perhaps we should target some Science specific event/ location? FERMI Lab? Smithsonian? Dinosaur Adventure Land? :-) http://www.dinosauradventureland.com/ Quote
Freethinker Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 And what ever happened to finding a Van Morrison concert? Irish, you were in charge of that! Quote
Freethinker Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Or perhaps the most obvious target Galapagos Islands Cruise! Quote
