ErlyRisa Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 I may take light 'light years' to reach a destination...but if i were bigfoot, and was half the size of the universe, then in order for me to see the universe from the other side I would only need to take one step. yes the postulate is philisophical in nature... which brings me to my piont. maybe me, being bigfoot, can only occupy the enirety of the universe if I am nothing more than part of the universe as a 'ghost' of information. --makes me think that god is actually real. sanctus Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 If you were a bigfoot that big you would have to have a very subtle body because your head and your feet wouldn't be causally related...I think this answers your questions. Quote
ErlyRisa Posted March 25, 2007 Author Report Posted March 25, 2007 but like a game of Chinese Whispers... I can tell my foot to move... faster than what a light beam would take to reach it... ..especially so, if I don't tell it to make a linear step, instead if I cheat and just 'shuffle' around oribitally untill I get to the otherside. ...probably why relativity don't work too well on centripital motion. sanctus Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Sorry I don't know the game you refer to so I'm a bit lost. Quote
ErlyRisa Posted March 25, 2007 Author Report Posted March 25, 2007 I read (a long time ago), in a popular Science mag, that information could theoretiaclly travel faster than the bounds that we set upon the universe with spacetime/light. If this is the case... then if the information was large enough, relative to the universe, than, relativistically speaking, an ant would perceive a flashlight as something the size of the sun, and would have no-hope in ever outrunning it, but I on the other hand, can just place the flashlight on the ground, and make one step (being Big Foot), and in effect out run the speed of light. --so on a Darwinian, survival of the Human species, stand piont, what do we want to do...become a smaller package so that we can reside in side an atom,,, or go big and ascend to the size of our percieved environment. spectrum disorder Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 We'll be gobsmacked once we know what makes the universe works :) Quote
CraigD Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 but like a game of Chinese Whispers... I can tell my foot to move... faster than what a light beam would take to reach it...The game of Chinese Wispers – also called “telephone” or “rumor” – is simply a demonstration of how information can become distorted in the retelling. One person recites a message to another, who recites it to another, etc., then the last person recites the message to the first, who compares them to see how they changed. Obviously, this means of communication – which is not a bad analogy for how signals travel in a human (or presumably a bigfoot) body – is much, much slower than light. I believe what ErlyRisa is suggesting is the “long, rigid stick” scenario, which ask, if I push on one end of a long rigid stick, won’t someone on the end immediately feel it, or at least feel it before the light image of me pushing it occurs. Practically the answer is no. In ordinary materials, the end of a long stick doesn’t experience a push on its opposite end until a “pressure wave” traveling at the speed of sound in that material reaches it. In a material we think of as very rigid, such as steel, the speed of sound is 5000 to 6000 m/s, or about .00002 time the speed of light. In principle, the stick could be made of some “super material” (such “neutronium” or “quarkium”, degenerate matter equivalent to a giant atomic nucleus or a giant neutron), but even then, it would still be made of fundimantal particles interacting via bosons limited to the speed of light (in this example quarks interacting via gluons), so could only approach, never match or exceed, the speed at which the signal could be sent using light. ErlyRisa Posted March 27, 2007 Author Report Posted March 27, 2007 actually the principal that I reas in the Mag...went like so. If we want to communicate with Mars occupants in real time, then we need a medium that is faster than light...so... The principal revolved around using two lasers, some how the information was theoretically able to travel faster through the 'connceted beam' from piont A to B than what the light was traveling at. It had somethig to do with quantum theory ( i remmember reading) -So the 'spring effect' is not what I am talking about. Quote

As the linked to wikipedia article explains, theory predicts that neither this technique, nor any other quantum entanglement-related phenomena, can be used to communicate faster than light (though such a technology, the “ansible”, has long been a staple of science fiction). It does suggest that it may be possible to use quantum teleportation to create 2 identical objects, like the replicators and teleporters on Star Trek, though without the ability to duplicate existing objects, such as people. ErlyRisa Posted March 27, 2007 Author Report Posted March 27, 2007 I read that article too (in popsci mag) but this article wasn't about that. --I really should try and find the mag. Quote
Tormod Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 You might have read a story about the discovery that the phase velocity of light waves travels faster than the actual wave, like what is explained here: Scientists break speed of light However, as the article notes, this is only a matter of how wave motion is interpreted. It has still not been possible to use this motion to send information of any kind, and doing so would be a violation of relativity theory (although it would be really cool!). Quote
ErlyRisa Posted March 27, 2007 Author Report Posted March 27, 2007 that may be just 'info spoof' , but on first glance seems legit. WOW --! ...so in effect NEC is trying to develop the next form of Real Time information exchange. (or even faster, I guess, that with each increase in speed transmission, you enlarge the data volume to an nth degree....ie you wouldn't be able to transmit the info entangled in the wave, but you could 'switch' it on and off, and with each divisional factor of wave transmission you can encode information as an SOS torch light effect... so C.300 would be 300bits per C --that's still a damn lot faster than a 2400 kbuad modem!!(on copper)) I just wonder, was distance a factor... ie 300c @ 2mm maybe a different concept to actually being able to stretch that 300c out over a distance?...would the 'speeden-ing' material be able to be made into a wire? ..Have you also heard of that thing an Aussie chick did, where she 'captured' light ... actually stopping it in a medium, and letting it go!! - It was a news article here in AU about 3 years ago. It is legit, it has been since duplicated in several establishments, and the stopping or slowing down of light is nothing new these days. I've read today (early this morning) about reversing light (will find link if I can - ps I read it in an email link it was about using specially created prisms but I deleted email without thinking I needed it) which has potential for invisble cloaking etc. We are now finding that with great leaps of faith we can transcend the limits we have 'imposed' in our current theories. There's an article somewhere where quantum teleportation is now possible (albeit only with single particles in what are nothing more than experimental situations) Current theories prove to be extremely limited in their scope, as the following statement indicates: "She says their experiment only disproves the general misconception that nothing can move faster than the speed of light....The scientific statement "nothing with mass can travel faster than the speed of light" is an entirely different belief, one that has yet to be proven wrong. The NEC experiment caused a pulse of light, a group of waves with no mass, to go faster than light." (quote from CBC article) (I did a search and there are items about bending light the wrong way at: NBC - Harry Potter's 'Invisibility Cloak' Made Possible By Science? also Sci Am Visible Light Bent the 'Wrong' Way - sorry forum wont let me post links just run a google news search using these keywords: light cloak effect) Quote
ErlyRisa Posted March 27, 2007 Author Report Posted March 27, 2007 Yeah... I have always beleived, that when we 'ascend', or those that already have eg. Jesus... are just BIG FOOTS... information as part of the universe. are we understanding the matrix yet? The Matrix... It's a bueatifull thoery regarding...the Higher/Controlling Entity (the computer) and the Evolution of the Species (Neo(His name also gives it away...neo[insert ability here])) The Matrix accounts for 'The Algorithm' as the 'Intelligent Designer' ... the one the Breeds Neo(s)... Neo...could be equated to people in our own history ... eg. Jesus. So in effect... the Father (God), of Jesus, can be considered the 'Algorithm' that spawned him. The 'Algorithm' , is not outside , the Matrix(Universe)... it is a part of it, and is the builder of the universe. The "Algorithm's" , 'Absoluteness' 'Predictablility' , makes the decision, that in order for the Universe to evolve (contain: smarter packets of information(Humans/Machines)) then it has to set up, 'Nudges' in the matrix, to spawn Neo Evolution. Hopefully...This backs up some ,claims about the 'Theory Of everything' --not my idea.. The New, Watchowski bible. This 'Algorithm' ... is BIG FOOT. Quote
quadrapod Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Why would you move faster than light you would move at the fastest speed that your legs could contract and ignoring the millions of impossibilities in your question your leg would move as quickly as you could moment it in that direction. I think that by looking at ion drives you may find the answer to your question. Ion drives only output a mille Newton or so of thrust but they output this thrust over years allowing them to reach places in deep space by accelerating over the whole course of there flight. However they will never get anywhere near the speed of light because there is resistance from every piece of matter in the universes gravity as well as the drag caused by light and small gas particles higher thrust only makes it accelerate to an equilibrium faster. sanctus Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Yes quantum teleportation is possible, a prof with his team at my university proved/did it, but it can't be used for supra-luminous information exchange, see any link which explains what this is. Quote
