coberst Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 New generations must go far beyond their legacy Descartes’ legacy to all of us via philosophy can be labeled, I think, as rationalism (discovery of truth through pure reason), dichotomy (mind/body split), and certainty. Even though very few of us know anything about philosophy, almost everything we think results from the philosophy we inherit through social osmosis (unconscious assimilation). Philosophy theory permeates almost all of our mental gymnastics without our conscious recognition. I speculate that such is true because it fits well for the ego of all humans, especially philosophers, and because it also fits well with the interests of the Christian faith. Descartes’ legacy makes it easy to place our self in a hierarchy of being with humans one step below God and a giant step above animals. It appears to me that psychology would say that we are essentially creatures of desire rather than creatures of contemplation. A modern day Descartes, who was tuned into Freudian psychology, might very well conclude that “I desire, therefore, I am”. If we want to understand our self and our world we will necessarily have to learn some bit of philosophy and psychology. We become interested in philosophy when we begin to ask questions that go to the ‘root’ of all matters and we turn to psychology if we want to comprehend why humans do the things we do. Someone said that only one person in a thousand ever “strikes at the root”. I do not think a liberal democracy in a hi-tech world can survive if such remains to be true. Hi-tech gives us the ability to easily destroy our self and our world; liberal democracy makes all citizens to be sovereign and thus responsible in some small way for the integrity of our existence. We are all in the same boat and if only one person in a thousand accepts the responsibility of democracy I think our species may have a very limited engagement on this planet. I think that we must become much more intellectually sophisticated than we are now and I do not expect that our educational systems can help us much in that effort. We must become independent learners. Quote
Queso Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 Reporting from the new generation- I meet a lot of people and I am very pleased to assure you that there is a very wide desire to understand philosophy and psychology amongst the indigo children. I have only met a few psychology/philosphy majors, but I've found that we're all amateurs and we're addicted to learning. For the most part, at least. Down here in the South, people just don't exercise their brains as much.Too many hours sitting in the house watching television... New generations know better, I know this. I love seeing evolution at work. Schools in America are F***** up, especially in Cali where they can't even afford paper. Huh? We must become independent learners. It is inevitable. The internet is so amazing........... I honestly don't know what to do with the school system.Or the american parenting system.I ay ay... Thoughts? Quote

I think that we must recognize that our schools and colleges are there to prepare us to be good at production and consumption. After our schools days are over we must prepare to make our society better than that which your society gave you. My message is 'get a life--get an intellectual life'. This means that after schooling is complete you must begin to become a critical self-conscious, independent thinkers, and learners so as prepare your self for the job of making a better society than that received. Buffy Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I do not know who said it first I just know that I have seen it in books many times.Yes, but you inexplicably overstate its meaning. Sure only 1 in 1000 is an Einstein or a Ceasar: so what? Its always been that way, and we don't seem to have made out all that badly! :eek2: Stomp the molehills,Buffy Quote

But like all statistics the person who wrote that first number knew well that 73% of all statistics are made up on the spot. Quote
clapstyx Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 I agree with you that this generation needs to go beyond their legacy. The question is how. I suppose if you were look at whats being done on the planet now you could imagine how people in 50 years time might judge us and so judge ourselves now by that standard of expectation. Its obvious that consciousness generally is expanding. I am sure that there will be someone who reads this and wants to dispute it so I will expand consciousness now in a way that relates to the original post. In Australia there is a group of people that are nearing the completion of a project called "The blueprints for the creation of universal harmony". Just by giving you the title you will automatically begin to imagine what might be in such a document and because you are aware of it you will become conscious of things that should or should not be components. The blueprints are based upon a concept called "Factorial Harmony" which is a way of logically constructing an expression of perfect harmony. Obviously to create harmony of universal or factorial proportions you need to unite the each of the logical formats so that understanding expands and so too our chances if this is what we ultimately pursue. Soon an email will be released which invites people to make additions to the conceptual expression so there might be 50 interlinked individual representations of the concept so that for those who were only concsious of one or two types they will become simultaneously conscious of a much greater number and they will be able to incorporate that depth of logic into their thought processing algorithms. Particularly it will be important for those who pursue the creation of perfect harmony. For everybody else it wont matter either way if its done or its not done but they will miss out on aobtaining that greater sense which will theoretically enable the mind to evolve and the imagination to evolve to a new level that is more encompassing of concepts of universal dimensions. I say this because most people cant consciously think of more than a couple of things at a time. This project will mean that those presnt will be conscious maybe 50 things at once as part of the greater expression with all elements in tune with a governing concept which decides which concepts are in or out. The governing concept is "to exist within a divine reality". Because the concepts are new each persons thought process upon being exposed to the concept is going to be original. That is to say there is no template or no media indoctrinated view as to what should be the response. This means everyone will make their own realisations on a personal level. In theory if each person comes to realise 3 things that are of an original nature to them in relation to the expanding possibility of universal harmony being created those realisations will interplay with the realisations of others and we will collectively be thinking of things we have never experienced before. This will create new possibilities for some of us to go beyond the midset thinking of our parents who so far as I know never set out to create universal harmony or seriously attempt to save the world and see us exist within a divine reality of that magnitude in our lifetime.
