I'm doing an experiment with a small solar chamber with six vents. What's a good method of making an automated temperature controled vent inside a 10cm diameter x 15cm high pvc cylinder? It needs to be fully open above 24°C and air-tight shut bellow 14°C. Everything is standard atmospheric pressure. Is there a way to do this passively with common materials like rubber bands, duct tape, kite string, candles, ball point pen, latex gloves, aquarium tubing, aluminum cans, pop bottles, & paperclips? I'd rather not use any electrical controls because it's near water. Just curious if anyone has any ideas? Thanks. :)

 

You're a bit lean on details, but here's what I got. (What does 'fully open' mean? :read: ) A simple hinged flapper-type valve made of foil & covering the top of the cylinder. Given the right weight, (determined by experimentation) when the temp heats the air in the cylinder it raises the flap & opens the cylinder to cooling; when the air in the cylinder cools, gravity pulls the flap back down to closed position. :)
