Does Censorship Influence Progress?

Considering the almost infinite universe we live in, does saying "This is the wrong way to do this" restrict how far we as a collective people can move towards improvements/new ideas/advancement/ingenuity? Or is it a system designed to keep us in a line heading towards the greater good, keeping people focused on a single area of ideals? I personally believe in the former because I have more faith in humanity then choosing the latter, but neither opinion is really wrong. Regardless, discuss.
