InfiniteNow Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 What is your favorite India Pale Ale (IPA)? You know what to do. :hihi: I've made this multiple choice, but, please, do try to limit it to one or two. India Pale Ale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The creation of India Pale Ale (IPA) during the early 1700s was the result of tremendous efforts by British brewers to overcome a difficult problem: during the 1700s beer did not keep well on long ocean voyages, especially into hot climates. These hot environments resulted in the arrival of flat, sour beer. Before refrigeration and pasteurization, the brewer's only weapons against spoilage were alcohol and hops. Alcohol provided an unfriendly environment for microbes and the hops prevented the growth of the bacteria that cause sourness. Therefore high alcohol content and high hopping rates could protect beer from the souring associated with long storage times. Quote
freeztar Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 I voted for Sierra Nevada and Anchor Liberty. I'm assuming the Anchor Liberty means Anchor Steam Liberty. Quote

Jay-qu Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Good chance you wouldnt have heard of it, but James Squires IPA - James Squire was melbournes first brewer Brewed with all pale and Munich malts, James Squire’s Pale Ale is rich and robust with the earthly floral dry hop character of Fuggles hops. Made for tastng with respect. It compliments the Brewhouse chicken. Quote
Guest chendoh Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Voted Other, Not sure if this classifies as IPA or not. All four of their brews are excellent! Harbor Lighthouse Ale from http://www.barharborbrewing.com/ The last time I picked some up, it went for 52 american, for 12 x 22oz bottles. The soda syrups are also excellent!:eek_big: Quote
freeztar Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Are Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale really India Pale Ales? Quote
Turtle Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 What is your favorite India Pale Ale (IPA)? You know what to do. :QuestionM I don't have a fave yet. I only started drinking IPA's a while back and I get a 6-pack of whatever once-a-month if I'm lucky so I buy something different each time. None of those names on the poll ring a bell. Will report in next month. Love the IPA!!!  :eek_big: Quote
InfiniteNow Posted May 17, 2007 Author Report Posted May 17, 2007 Are Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale really India Pale Ales? <Grumbles under breath... stupid spot on question from bright beer enjoying member... grrrr...> Ahem... <cough> <cough>... HI FREEZTAR!! I guess it's open for interpretation. There are many pale ales, and IPA is a subset of that group, however, I suggest that Anchor and Sierra Nevada are hoppy enough to make the cut. I guess it's open for interpretation. There are many pale ales, and IPA is a subset of that group, however, I suggest that Anchor and Sierra Nevada are hoppy enough to make the cut. The big distinction with IPA's seems to be the extra hops as well as the high alcohol content. English beer could be shipped far away to India over a significant period of time and retain its "freshness" without refrigeration. In a brief search I could not find any well defined distinctions between IPA and PA. From what I've stumbled upon, IPAs seem to be at a 6% minimum alcohol content. This chart shows Sierra Nevada Pale Ale as 4.82% alcohol. Nonetheless, Sierra Nevada is one of my favorite beers for its light, hoppy flavor. They also seem to be forward thinking. Quote

Turtle Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 I have a bill that hasn't come in yet this month, so rather than have the money I set aside gather no interest, I did the responsible thing and took an interest in spending the money on tobacco & liquor. :cat:  So, I got me a sextuple o' 12 ozzys of Elk Rock Wapati* IPA out of Portland Oregon (on sale for $6.99/6). Of the IPA's listed in the poll, the Safeway I went to had the Red Hook($8.49/6) and the Sierra Nevada ($7.99/6). They also had these IPA's >> Elk Rock, Thunderhead, Broken Halo, Inverson, and Bridgeport. (all priced around $8.00/6) So, here's to Elk Rock Wapati India Pale Ale!! :hihi: :cup: *Wapati is Amerinidian for 'elk'. Quote

So, here's to Elk Rock Wapati India Pale Ale!! :friday:  *Wapati is Amerinidian for 'elk'. One Wapati IPA down. Seems there is more a trail to it than I thought. Elk Rock is a brand from Pyramid AKA Portland Brewing Company. I like it well enough; definitely an IPA. I can't find a company site yet, but I found some reviews. >> Portland Brewing Company (Pyramid) I'm curious about the % alcahol too (:hyper: ) as itsch not liiisssteddede on the botttole. :friday: Shtoh whut ifff um a lite wait!?   :secret:   0.o  :hihi: :naughty: :1drink:  :friday: Quote
Turtle Posted June 5, 2007 Report Posted June 5, 2007 I won't have a favorite until I try a lot of them. Here's my latest reviews. Last week's IPA was Inversion from Deschutes Brewery in Bend Oregon. Bottle says 'layers of soft caramel malt notes and generous amounts of our favorite Northwest hops." Too soft for my money, but good & hoppy and at 6.8% alcohol a nice kick in the loin cloth. $8.50/6-pack US Today its Bridgeport IPA from Portland Oregon. This stuff sucks! Weak, watery swill and only 5.5% alcohol. I would have done better to give some chub $6.50 US to poke me in the eye with a stick. Taht is all ;) :hihi: Quote

I hate it as well. The only time I'd drink it was when the bar had bud, miller, bridgeport, and redhook (not good as well). Please tell me you've tried the Rogue Hazelnut Brown. ;) Back on topic, I'm going to pick up some Atlanta brewed Sweetwater IPA soon so I can take a photo for the Second Hypo Photo Scavenge. Honestly, just for the photo. :hihi: Quote
