ULAS J0034-00 is much more distant than I’d expect it to be possible to observe something so dim – according to the linked-to BBC article, about 50 LY, though it will take about a year to make a more precise measurement, via parallax.

 

The sensitivity of this kind of astronomy boggles my mind – it’s amazing. :D
