Jay-qu Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I think it would be great if we could get an intercontinental 5k running race happening amongst the members here. If I can get some support of who would like to take part then more detailed plans can be made, but for the moment the way I see it happening is:-we get a pool of contestants-each contestant uses gmap-pedometer to map out an approx 5k course-these course are submitted for everyone to see, making sure gradients are consistent-we set a week or so for this course to be completed and the contestants can record their times online depending on the number of entries we could have age categories or even a bike category for those that dont like running! Wadda'ya think? :phones: J Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I am SO in. Let's try to get this together. It should be a lot of run. I mean, Fun. Runners to your mark. ::bang:: :phones: Quote
sanctus Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 why not, used to be my favorite discipline in athletics...but don't be scared I stopped a few years ago, the training is gone but the head is still there (I don't know if in english this means what it means in italian, what I mean is that endurance is also a mind thing, ie: keep running even if all your body tells you to stop) Quote
Jay-qu Posted June 13, 2007 Author Report Posted June 13, 2007 I get what you mean :phones: dont worry Im very much of mental endurance at the moment too :D Quote
TheBigDog Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 I'll take Charlie for a 5K walk, but there is no way I can do the run at the moment. I would need an ambulance and a priest following me. Bill Quote
Jay-qu Posted June 16, 2007 Author Report Posted June 16, 2007 I wont ask what the priest is for - but its good to have more competiters :) Quote
TheBigDog Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 Here is my route. I will be walking at a brisk pace with the dog. There will be no running. I have no illusions of having the best time, but I am going to participate. I have been taking the dog for daily walks slightly shorter than that. This will be a nice stretch. There is even a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright original that I pass just before the turnaround. It is at the end of Redbird. Kids in the neighborhood also report that Sharon Stone has recently purchased one of the houses along the lake that I will be passing; who knows? Bill Jay-qu 1 Quote
TheBigDog Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 5.5K in 56 minutes today. The dog is exhausted now. Bill Quote
Jay-qu Posted June 17, 2007 Author Report Posted June 17, 2007 Good work BD  Heres my route - it took a bit of tweaking to get a route that starts and finishes at my front door but I managed :) Gmaps Pedometer I noticed that the elevation tool doesnt work to well in australia.. ohwell Quote

Mercedes Benzene Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Okay... I have a couple potential courses mapped out, but I want to know what the restrictions are for changes in elevation.......if any exist? Quote
TheBigDog Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Okay... I have a couple potential courses mapped out, but I want to know what the restrictions are for changes in elevation.......if any exist? If you start and end in the same place then what is the worry about elevation changes? If it is a one way course you could go all downhill I guess. Bill Quote
Tormod Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 My 5K will probably be slightly hilly...+/- 60 meters in elevation I think. That's just the way it is where I live. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Okay... well here's one of my options. I opted out of a circuitous route (straight paths are easier to come up with:hihi:). My only concern is that this has a lot of hills... so I may have to change it. I do live in a hilly area though, so I'm not sure how "flat" I can make my final course. Gmaps Pedometer Quote
Tormod Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Here's my run...it involves a nasty 200m hill so I might change it. The satellite image is really poor for my neighborhood but the map is okay. Gmaps Pedometer Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Isn't this supposed to be a 5k race Tormod? Yours looks to be about 9 :cup: Quote
