I've been using Symantec Antivirus on my dell laptop, os: Windows XP, since Sept 06 and I've had no issues with it.

I was required to uninstall whatever software I was using and install a free edition when I moved in the dorms at my college in order to connect to the residence hall network.

I hope my college did their research and picked out something good.

I use CA Vet.

Several years ago I came across RAV just before it was acquired by MS.

RAV AntiVirus Website - Reliable AntiVirus Solutions, Antivirus Research, Statistics

The Linux version was exceptional at digging out the crap from MS Win mail files. All the workstations on the (MS) network would have their mail files backed up onto the Linux SMB server and one scan of the server would reveal which Win machines needed to be looked at in further detail.

Does anybody have any further info about a new release as the MS AV product doesn't appear to be as thorough?

I've used Norton for a while now. I'm strongly considering Nod 32 or BitDefender when my subscription is up. I had some real hassles with Norton a while back. They extended my subscription and it seems to be working but maybe I switch anyway when my subscription is up. Though there is this about Nod 32: "The software uses some technical terms in the interface and other areas of the product. Novices may find the higher-ranked products easier to use"

Trend Micro for me. I have used Norton and McAfee in the past. McAfee was the worst in my experience. Far too invasive, didn't play nice with other programs and was a bear to uninstall. Norton not too much better.

Trend has had very fast reaction time, small footprint, and didn't interfere with other programs that are supposed to be running. Again, all in my experience.

OS's Windows XP, 2000, Server 2003, Vista (basic and ultimate).

I had McAffe...

but I picked up "trojan looksy" virus a few months back ... an annoying-as-hell virus.. red screen and endless system cleaner spam pop ups.

I used Kaspersky 6.0 and it knocked it out...

Been good ever since.

I've switched from F-Secure to BitDefender. Anybody else using it? I've been on it now for a few weeks, and it's picked up viruses on my machine which neither F-Secure nor Norton could see.

Also, a mate of mine brought an external HD over to my house which he scanned using Avast, which told him there was no viruses detected. BitDefender saw fifteen viruses. Both Avast and BitDefender had the latest virus definition updates.

I like BitDefender!

Yes, I've had similar experiences with Bitdefender. It's definitely a solid AV imo.

I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 and I love it. Light and fast but still gives good security. Probably the best anti-virus, but also costly. It has a minor compatibility issue with Windows 7. :(
