clapstyx Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Quantum Theory is not really my thing but I am working as an editor on a movie script that includes it so I need to check some science. The Theory in the movie relates to the the component of Quantum Theory that apparently says that a single photon when confronted with 2 holes to pass through will actually pass through both...but it takes that a step further and says that under certain conditions multiple photons can "re-merge" into a single particle of energy. I was wondering if this has actually been done yet or not or whether its believed to be possible. Based on that being true the theory of the character is that photon particle build up can be achieved and then takes this further to say that if it was the ideal of mankind to construct a universe that was based on a singular celled organism with an outer perimeter of life created by photon particle build up process then it could be done by creating a device that allowed photon particles to be collected and transmitted towards a point where they accumulated into matter. Once you began the accumulation process light from any source would contribute to the build up. Its an interesting script in every other sense but it does depend on whether energy can be compacted into matter. Quote
snoopy Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Hi Clapstyx, First of all the experiment I think you are referring to in QM says that a photon can travel through both slits or holes. Yes this has been verified. But clarification is needed its one photon, two holes, the same one photon can travel through both holes at the same time. There is no multiple photon to 're-merge'. You also basically ask 'Can energy be compacted into matter' The answer is yes this is basically what matter appears to be. Sounds like a terrible sci-fi movie though. You also ask can photons make matter ? Well not really, not substantially, technically it's their energy which can create material objects not the photons themselves for instance given enough energy a photon can become an electron but generally decays back into photons and other particles once it loses energy. Cheers;) Quote
EWright Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 Based on that being true the theory of the character is that photon particle build up can be achieved and then takes this further to say that if it was the ideal of mankind to construct a universe that was based on a singular celled organism with an outer perimeter of life created by photon particle build up process then it could be done by creating a device that allowed photon particles to be collected and transmitted towards a point where they accumulated into matter. You also suggest that photons from within the universe are being directed at a point -- which sounds singular in nature. It would be more accurate to say photons are directed at virtually every point or in every direction (if talking about a source of multiple photons, as opposed to one photon, with nothing blocking them). I've written a screenplay and would be interested in taking a look at this and would offer comment if you want to share. If so, private message me. It doesn't sound like a strong idea so far, but obviously you're not giving us the full story either. How long is this, and what type of script is it (ie, feature length, tv, etc). Quote
jungjedi Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 you might want to google "interferometer" Quote
