Do you have GoogleEarth on your computer? If yes, what do you use it for and how do you like it? If no, why not?

Now that the thread is open, I have some specific questions for anyone familiar with using GoogleEarth and/or GoogleEarth Community Forum.

I have found what I believe is a 135km diameter impact crater in Mexico that is not on the official lists. I want to mark it so anyone who uses GoogleEarth and has Community layers on will see my mark. I read the help stuff and they say with your mark selected, choose the 'save as KML' option. I did this, and here is the contents of my KML file when opened in Notepad.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.1">
<Document>
<name>Cráter del Tortuga Jorge.kml</name>
<Style id="sh_icon36_copy1">
	<IconStyle>
		<color>ff00ffff</color>
		<scale>1.1</scale>
		<Icon>
			<href>http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/pal3/icon36.png</href>
		</Icon>
	</IconStyle>
</Style>
<StyleMap id="msn_icon44_copy1">
	<Pair>
		<key>normal</key>
		<styleUrl>#sn_icon44_copy1</styleUrl>
	</Pair>
	<Pair>
		<key>highlight</key>
		<styleUrl>#sh_icon36_copy1</styleUrl>
	</Pair>
</StyleMap>
<Style id="sn_icon44_copy1">
	<IconStyle>
		<color>ff00ffff</color>
		<Icon>
			<href>http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/pal3/icon44.png</href>
		</Icon>
	</IconStyle>
</Style>
<Placemark>
	<name>Cráter del Tortuga Jorge</name>
	<description>135 kilometer crater below mark. Cráter del Tortuga Jorge. Discovered using Google Earth May 26, 2007.</description>
	<LookAt>
		<longitude>-107.2278254711386</longitude>
		<latitude>26.86724098863387</latitude>

</Placemark>
</Document>
</kml>

The instructions then say to upload my KML file somewhere on a server, and then when I paste that URL it will take people to my Mark, (and/or make my Mark visible to anyone with Community layers on that flies over the position of the crater?...I hope???) This is where I have hung-fire. How do I 'upload' a file with extension KML when it's not an extension option for attachments or Gallery images?

Takk. :lol: :hihi:

I use it to look for impact craters :eek:

Looking at the inca (or are they aztec) lines in peru was kinda fun.

The Sphinx was pretty cool too.

On Forest Lake in Minnesota lake is half iced, half open. Forest lake is a chain of 3 lakes. If you zoom in on First lake, you see a boat and to the east of that, you see Ice and fish houses.

The second lake part shows the roads on the ice and alot more fish houses.

Third lake is kinda cool cuz you can see where the Ice ridge formed from the wind blowing the ice east before it became real solid.

I think its on second lake you can see the shadow of a small plane on the ice, but I havent been able to find the plane yet.

I tried to upload it to geocities and it refused. Not an accepted file type.

Where are you trying to upload it?

Well, I tried over at PostMagnet, but not an accepted file type there. Not acceptable file type here at Hypog either. The instructions simply said. 'upload it to a server somewhere'. :lol::hihi: :eek: :hyper:

Here's the page I used. >> What Is KML?

Good thing I can swim or I'd be drowned by now. :hyper::eek:

That worked for me!

That's really cool looking Turtle! How'd you find it?

Googlearthing,

Buffy

Looking for an obscure city name to put in my profile. :cup: I first found a smaller one just NW of it, about 8 miles across, then found the big one as I expanded my search in the area. I wrote USGS, but no word back yet.

It worked for me too!! Yippeeee!!! thank you! been trying for weeks to sort this one out. We are hunting impact sites actively over here. >> http://hypography.com/forums/environmental-studies/11540-space-rock-impact-site-s.html Now we can authenticate our discovery claims. ;) can you hear us now??? :phones:

Crater del Tortuga Jorge, KML file

When I clicked on the link I was taken to the GoogleEarth home page. Was it supposed to take me straight to the crater?

I use GoogleEarth to look at other parts of the world, not for anything in particular, just looking.

What it does depends on how your file extension associations are set up. If you've got a recent version of GoogleEarth installed (the application, not the web page), it should navigate directly to the location specified in the kml file (it did for us!).

If you don't have the application installed, well, shame on you! :phones:

I think that goes for just about all of the rest of us...it will probably have a practical application someday, but for now its just a way to get really pretty pictures of Mother Earth...

Just looking,

Buffy

Speaking of just looking, I was just looking around the GoogleEarth Community Forum and found people are doing more than pretty pictures. The name of their game is location, location, location. For example I found a KML for all the US Airforce bases. :cup: There are some for bomb shelters in Germany (Mercedes;)) with KML's. ;) Lots of Military theme stuff. :crash:The flying around to explore seems only a small part of what people are using this resource for.

Here's the Community Forum page. >> http://bbs.keyhole.com/entrance.php?Cat=0

I used GoogleEarth to plan & record both the Sasquatch expeditions and the Lechtenberg Park study. The measuring tool is very handy. I only recently found you can change elevation for side views as well as straight down. (keep in mind the side views are extrapolations & not actual photos.)

No worries Mam; take your time. :cup: :phones:

that's a wrap.

It's all good now :eek:

I'm looking at the crater, very cool!

I'm glad you got it figured out Turtle, otherwise I wouldn't have found this forum. :shrug: It's really pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I never would have been able to post if I had to figure out kml/kmz first. But did you know that once you have GE downloaded and the code you showed, there's an easy way to display that. Highlight and copy the file code, right-click on "My Places" and choose paste from the menu. All of that code becomes a placemark icon in "My Places" and in the viewer.

You can also search the web to see if a particular place has a kml file. Just search for "kml crater" for instance and kml files showing craters will be displayed from GEC and other forums.

Roger...ditto glad figured, ditto glad found. :D I knew there had to be some shortcuts. Is there a way to get a KML for any placemark? When I right click on them I don't see an option for that. :shrug: :)

If you do the opposite of what hill described then you should have no problems. Right-click on a place and select "copy". Then go to your desktop (windows key+D) and create an empty text file by right-clicking on an empty space on the desktop and selecting "New->Text Document". Then paste the copied text in there and name the file "whatever.kml". :D
