Whenever I see a clip of a film studio, or someone directing a movie, etc, the director (or one of the other film lackies) always seems to hold up a gadget to the person before being filmed.

Does anyone know what it is? My best guess was some sort of light meter or something... but I want to know exactly what it does. It usually appears as a small gadget, maybe about the size of a camera, with a white circular instrument at the top.

Just curious...

Success! Thanks Buffy!

So, what exactly are light meters used for?

It seems like such a magical device. I picture it informing you "okay. the light is good. shoot."

...but I have a feeling that's not exactly how it works. :hihi:

I just found a link after searching "director's light meter".

The reason I couldn't find it before was that I just googled "light meter", and that turned up nothing.

Um, setting the shutter speed and the f-stop...haven't you ever used an SLR camera? Film (and actually video) is the same thing...

Why the heck is this in Computer Science? :hihi:

Clapper,

Buffy
