Pretty soon I'm going to be back home in the Santa Cruz mountains of California.

I plan on setting up a garden somewhere deep in the forest, away from the city and the domesticated humans.

I want to grow vegetables and other kinds of food and herbs.

I grew radishes and pumpkins as a child...nothing too extravagent.

I figured I'd need to fence it off somehow.

What advice can you give the newbie?

Abandon all hope short of electrified fences and punji sticks, even if all your herbs are legal: California Deer will get past any obstacles you put up: they used to walk all over my backyard in spite of 6 foot fences....

Orb,

If you're deep in the forest, a garden is somewhat silly. Learn how to eat what nature already has grown for you naturally in the area. Find water, and make the occasional kill for protien. There ya go.

Don't waste all your energy bringing a rotor tiller and bags of compost up there.

If it's just a place in the forest, a spot you want to make your own and have something to return to, much will depend on what you're planting. Are you talking corn and green beans, or sunflowers and roses?

Upon meditation and your guys' posts I've realized that yes,

deep forest bad idea.

I want to grow food, for kicks and to eat.

Hopefully one of my friends will let me use some of their backyard space or something.

A symbiotic relationship must occur.

I'm sure there's someone somewhere that wouldn't mind a hippie coming around and tending to the Earth.

Also, very good idea on learning what's edible!

Something I've never known about California,

and have to figure out.

Any advice there?

I have totally minimalized and am taking the greyhound there with nothing but a backpack.

I'd recommend Peterson's Field Guide to "Wild Edible Plants" as well as "Medicinal Plants". :)

Stashing it at a friends house, though :)

Thank you for the reccommendations.

This *is* California--and worse, the Santa Cruz Mtns--and I'm sure a post to Craig's list would turn up some soul with a backyard looking for cheap labor that spoke English and would take care not to rip up the roots of the roses. They might even already have a compost heap and a veggie garden!

Have fun on the road,

29th of this month I set out.

I'll have my macbook (that I'll keep somewhere dry)

and there's WiFi everywhere. ;)

I never ever want to come back to Bradenton, Florida

where my family currently resides.

If anyone's ever been to Manatee county . .

they know why.

:eek2:

Also .. I have a feeling this place is going to be underwater soon.

I grew up there, mate.

I am so in love with the redwood forests,

to be here in FL makes me sick!

(Although I moved here from Staten Island a few months ago...

That was even more hellish than this place.

I just can't stay in one spot for too long.)

It was nice to see my family, but enough of that for now.

I'm taking the greyhound to LA and then getting a ride from a friend eventually, up to the bay area. I think I want to stop in Big Sur for at least a week and just...fall in love again.
