Vaporinthewind Posted July 31, 2007 Report Posted July 31, 2007 I know I should probobly work on my english more before switching to a new language... but oh well, I wanted to be different... & I love French. Well to begin with, most people call me Yvette, but Vapor is fine as well. It's actually been quite a while since I first visited this site, I honestly don't even remeber why I came back then... most likely I was doing research for one of my classes (I'm a sophmore in college by the way). I also may have just been looking for a message board with intelligent people like yourselves... well either way I liked what I saw and saved it to my favorites... and promptly forgot about it... until now. I just happened to be going through my favorites checking out sites I hadn't visited in a while, and got to this one and thought, wow why didnt I register when I first found this? I may have been slightly intimidated by all the large vocabularies and intellects... but I figured if I wanted to grow in those areas this would probobly be a good place to hang out. I am also pretty bad at writing and english in school... So I figured joining a site like this would force me to use my limited vocabulary and knowlege of basic rules to its fullest so I wouldn't look too ridiculous... and hey, what the heck I might even get better at writing and expressing myself articulately. For example, now that I think about it that last part sounded pretty redundant, but I'm not sure how to fix it... so if anyone notices things that really bother them or are just flat out wrong... feel free to express yourself... otherwise I'll do my best to learn by example & just have fun As far as intrests & hobbies go, I do love sciences, they've always been my favorite subject in school, as well as psychology, which is what I am currently majoring in. I also love reading, gaming, and anime when I can fit them in between schoolwork & schoolyears. My absolute worst subject is math... which is why I've been pretty atrocious in chemistry, the only science so far that doesn't come naturally to me... probobly physics too which I dread taking... I also like to use "dot dot dot" pretty frequently if you haven't noticed yet... is there a word for that? or maybe a rule for when it should be used? because I'm sure I've probobly broken it... Well I guess I've left a long enough introduction... wow I feel like I'm blogging or something...;) Quote

For a handbook I recommend Strunk & White's Elements of Style. (This is E.B. White of Charlotte's Web fame. :smart:) The "dot dot dot" is called an 'ellipsis' or 'ellipsis marks' and takes various meanings. It may refer to missing letters or words(e.g. I used it in the above quote to show I removed some of your words), it may indicate a pause as in reflection(e.g. "mmmm... I don't think so."), and in mathematics it indicates 'continues on infinitely' in reference to some set or expression that precedes the ellipsis (e.g. 1,2,3...). Guess I've left a long enough reply. Mon dieux!:) ;) Quote

Oh my gosh. I use that a incessantly also.... with disregard for it's purpose, which I'm not quite sure of myself. Welcome to Hypography! Quote
