Buffy Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 This was from a stupid game show we were watching this evening. Since pretty much no one here watches this kind of drivel, the answer to the question will remain a mystery until I reveal it (no spoilers if you're a "student of popular culture" like me!). No, there are only two choices: you may not choose "other." Vote away! :hihi:Buffy Quote
Buffy Posted August 9, 2007 Author Report Posted August 9, 2007 No fish? :hyper:Remember the question is, which would you rather *watch*! :hyper: For those of you not familiar with this little aspect of American Popular Culture, every July 4th (our nation's birthday) the "World Famous" Nathan's Hot Dog Stand on Coney Island Boardwalk in New York has an annual Hot Dog Eating Contest. This year the title was taken back by American Joey Chestnut with a record 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes, beating out long time champion Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi (who weighs in at a mere 165 lbs/75kg). It really is a major event, covered by ESPN the top sports cable channel in the US... I guess if it was translated to Norway, it would be a Cod Eating contest, so T, if you *want* to translate it that way, it means the same thing... :hihi: I can't believe I ate the whooooole thing, :)Buffy Quote
Tormod Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 I guess if it was translated to Norway, it would be a Cod Eating contest, so T, if you *want* to translate it that way, it means the same thing... :) Frankly I don't think we have eating contests like that. At least I would prefer not to know. :hyper: (The "fish" comment is something only a few of our members would get...it comes from another forum I frequent where it's an unwritten rule that all polls must have a fish-related option, or members will harass the poster until the poll is corrected.) :hihi: Quote
DougF Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 Well if you wanted something fishy you should watch the Presidential Debate. :hihi:I voted to watch the Hot Dog Eating Contest, I just have to watch, :) anyone who can eat a record 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes :eek2:if you have not seen this you should it is amazing. Quote
freeztar Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 I voted for Hot Dogs, but I would have voted for red herring if it were an option. :) Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 I voted for the debate. While watching people scarf down disgusting amounts of food in 12 minutes is cool, I'm a politician at heart. I really love debates, and they only get more interesting as election day approaches. Besides, I'll be able to vote next pres. election (yay me!:)), so that's getting me even more excited. Quote
Hill Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 I'm always leery of eating contests of any kind. Always afraid I'll be witness to the results of someone having exceeded their capacity. In the USofA we've been listening to debates for a loooong time already - at least debates have been held. By the time the real debate should be happening, maybe late spring or summer of 2008, all of the candidates will be looked on as nothing but masterdebaters and people will continue to avoid listening. At least the Dems are trying to debate important issues. W's party is still trying to prove who is holier than thou. :hihi: Quote
Jay-qu Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 hot dogs anyday :D, says I while im eating one :D Quote
freeztar Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of combining the two events. A hot dog eating contest could be the presidential debate. Voting for the underdog,Freezy Quote
alexander Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Frankly I don't think we have eating contests like that.Thats right, they are a more civilized siciety, Norway holds annual wife-carrying contest, the winner gets his wifes weight in beer  Quote
LaurieAG Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of combining the two events. A hot dog eating contest could be the presidential debate. Voting for the underdog,Freezy There would at least one benefit by combining the two events, you wouldn't hear any lies. Quote
alexander Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 There would at least one benefit by combining the two events, you wouldn't hear any lies.true true, but once they get all filled up with hot dogs and energy started building up from the newly eaten food, those guys wont shut up for hours.... unless you propose to shorten the presidential debates to 12 minutes, which would work fine too... Turtle Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 oh o! hotdog! B) I voted hotdog, but only because I voted on opposite day. I think these food eating contests are some sick & twisted behavior given how many people go hungry in the world. shame,B) shame, :naughty:shame.B) I'd rather listen to ministers debate on how to outlaw food eating contests. B) Quote
Michaelangelica Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 I have always found wasting food really offensive.I mean obscene, objectionable and sick making.I don't know whyPerhaps it was the nun's in school telling me about the starving kids in Africa. I have always been interested in politics so. . . an obvious choice. . but if the choice would have been to see the new Simpson's movie well.. (have seen it BTW very funny, very good, and that is from someone who hates USA humour) Quote
Monomer Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 Tough choice, since I'd rather watch neither, but I'm going with the presidential debate. Quote
