Turtle Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 What news source(s) do you use? How do they rate in regard to reliability? Do you favor one source? Favor a lot? No news at all? Poll is multiple choice; check all that apply. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 I LOVE the news. I'm somewhat of an addict. As far as how I get my news, I voted for the following: Newspapers: I read The Washington Post every single day. It's a quality newspaper, although I don't really use it for headline news, since it can only be read about after the fact. Therefore, I get *most* of my news from: Cable: CNN mostly. I enjoy that it's 24/7 news, so I get all the major stories right away. Occasionally I'll watch my local Fox news station, and rarely ABC just to catch up on some local happenings quickly. Whenever I'm on the compcuter, which is quite frequently, I use: Online: CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment & Video News I go there all the time, which gives me almost immediate access to important news (by means of a bright red "Breaking News" banner that's posted whenever something big happens). Otherwise, I enjoy browsing through the many pages of articles which often feature interesting things going on locally, in the US, and internationally. The free videos of stories are also usually entertaining. Good stuff. Turtle 1 Quote
Turtle Posted August 15, 2007 Author Report Posted August 15, 2007 I LOVE the news. I'm somewhat of an addict. ... no news is not good news as I just thought to say. :( I too feel the need for a feed. Currently I voted broadcast & cable TV, radio, online, and word of mouth*. Newspapers, magazines, and other hard copy news I gave up a number of years ago as too costly & cluttery. I will in general read whatever the occasion demands. :weather_storm: ;) *workers in Antarctica get free lectures from the working scientists. Quote
Hill Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I tend to use any source that I consider reliable, based on personal experience, as a start for my posts. I then try to get confirmation from other sources as well, either independent ones or links/references in the source and the sources I used to try to verify it. On my iGoogle home page I link to many online versions of newspapers, magazines, BBC news, and to many online only sites. I also use the home edition of the LA Times for ideas that can be expanded upon. Various science mags and Time (though that has become almost useless with many changes of late.) Broadcast TV news, radio, some cable tv channels (except faux news). Even Keith Olbermann and Jon Stewart sometimes provide material for further investigation (Tonight Olberman had a guy on touting his book that claimed there is a 50% chance that what we consider our life is actually someone else's creation in their version of "The Sims" or Second Life ;):(:weather_storm:) There there's Revver » IPHONE BILL, also featured on Countdown. have you got your iPhone bill yet? I get a lot of inspiration for posssible posts from the Google Earth Community forum. I follow those inspirations to create new posts there. Some I have brought to the attention of this community because I feel they are worth sharing with this audience. EDIT: How could I forget World Headlines | Weekly World News Quote
Monomer Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I get most of my news online at Google news. Not everything online is reliable, but there is such a vast and varied amount of information so I can sift through the junk. I get some of the news by word of mouth (generally tea room gossip), which I don't consider reliable (it's a bit like chinese whispers). Quote

CraigD Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 Online, I’ve gone from skimming several local and national sites, to almost exclusively reading news.google.com. That it renders quickly and well on a handheld device, allowing me to check it while waiting for the bus, etc., reinforces my behavior. I would likely read no newspaper other than local events papers (Washington CityPaper, etc.), but for the habit of some of my coworkers of spreading the front pages of the (left-leaning) Washington Post and (right-leaning) Washington Times on a table in our staff lounge. When I drive by myself, I tend to listen to NPR on WAMU 88.5 FM, but I do that only infrequently – on average, about 30 minutes/week, I guess. Recently, we were enticed by deep bundled discounts to subscribing to DirectTV, which has a nifty “newsmix” channel that lets you view and quickly select the audio of 8 pre-defined news channels. Although our enthusiasm for this was shortlived – 8 low-quality sources remains a low-quality source – we still occasionally use it to get for a quick glimpse of the major cable news channels. At 1280x720, it’s possible to read all the text in each windows, which is a pretty fat data pipe for a human being to suck :hihi:. Quote
Jay-qu Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 I get my news from a very wide variety of sources - The main three been tv, radio and online. But out of those three I only seek news online, the news just gets thrown at me on tv and radio, I dont watch tv or listen with the purpose of seeing/hearing the news. Quote
Becca Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 I'm glad nobody reads the tabloids expecting to get news. I don't know what they're like in America but in Britain they're terrible, often their top stories are about celebrities getting breast enhancements. Quote
Tarantism Posted August 27, 2007 Report Posted August 27, 2007 I suppose it should't come as a suprise that online has the most votes. Quote

yellow Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 I listen, I watch, I converse. I have ever mounting concern about the "truth" and "facts" that are fed to us. The overwhelming concentration on negative, and supposed attention grabbing news which seem to be more concerned with the number of viewers than the message and information being shared with them. The vast number of people who just accept and swallow all this drivel with no care of relevance, or actual importance to reality. "Well, its important enough to make the news. . ." I love to hear about the world, I just wish they would tell me something important, sometimes. Quote
Buffy Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 I admit to reading the tabloids. As a friend of mine likes to say mysteriously, "they're all true..." Unfortunately, the Weekly World News just ceased publication. Sniff. No more pics of presidents greeting space aliens... Its a business. Watch "Dirt" on FX if you want to know a bit about how it works. My karma gets balanced out on this topic by actually being a long time subscriber to The Economist.... I eat my news with honey,Buffy Quote
