Buffy Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 c1ay, i would equate it to the cruise control problems on that infamous Ford Exproler... whe cars just butst into flames out of nowhere in the middle of a trip :cup:Nah: more like the Chevy Corvair which if it did not randomly flip over on you, was probably pumping carbon monoxide into your system every time you drove... Unsafe at any speed, :)Buffy Quote

I'm assuming you meant the van version. My dads sedan simply burst into flames at a stop light! Quote
Theory5 Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 So, my friend told me the biggest screw-up in Vista (as far as he was concerned) was that there wasn't a run command or a command prompt in Vista. WRONG! there is a run command, when you hit the start button on the toolbar there is a search bar that you can type stuff in, just type run and you get the run thingy. Thats how i get to CMD or i think there is still the CMD thingy under accessories or somthing, i havent been on my vista machine in 3 weeks and i gotta wait 2 more days for the parts so im upset. there should be some sort of firewall that prevents the rootkit from getting in through another virus, just gotta look. Theory5 Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 What??? You missed The Tonight Show special last week???You didn't see "The Top Ten Reasons Why Windows is Inferior"??? Hint: number 7 was, "The Blue Screen of Death". I have not gotten the blue screen of death for years.I have gotten the black screen of annoyance though. :-P whoops sorry double post Quote

Didn't fully understand it:doh:...but I read it...forgot most of it:doh:Trying to figure out how to "test drive" Linux on my pc w/out flippin-it- up:doh::doh::cup::doh::doh: A rocket scientist I ain't:doh: Quote
C1ay Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Trying to figure out how to "test drive" Linux on my pc w/out flippin-it- up Just burn a LiveCD like Knoppix or Ubuntu. Boot from the CD and test drive Linux. Reboot to get back to Windoze. Quote
DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Just burn a LiveCD like Knoppix or Ubuntu. Boot from the CD and test drive Linux. Reboot to get back to Windoze. Sounds simple nuff....Now... If I really really like it how do I convince my even less computer savy wifey to let me keep it?!?!? (or how do you make a pc run either one depending on choice w/out having to load and work from the cd which is likely slower?) Also how much space while operating vs windoze? (mem/cpu consumption) Quote
alexander Posted November 28, 2007 Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 you dualboot, resize the windows partition (in case of ubuntu during the ubuntu install), install linux and set up the box to ask you if you want to boot to windows or linux (in case of ubuntu, once again, its a part of the installer, and is automagificated). DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 More reasons people don't go for the free linux It's a ROYALpain in the tush to download...The sites are definitly not non-geek friendly...It takes "forever" to download (after which it may or may not work)...and last but not least requires additional downloads of stuff (which may or may not work) to make a "live disk". I still haven't succeeded in making a live disk just to try it (after hours of F#####g around with about 20 different sites. I still don't have a ______ing clue what the _____ I'm doing wrong!) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! alexander Posted November 30, 2007 Author Report Posted November 30, 2007 what the hell are you talking about? literally 23 seconds and: http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/ubuntu-releases/gutsy/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso or you can literaly ask them to mail you the CD for free! Get Ubuntu - Download, request a CD, or buy on CD/DVD | Ubuntu all you need is a program to burn it, i hope you have a cd burning program or would you like a link to that as well? Quote
DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 A rocket scientist I ain't:doh: See the above^ Nor am I a computer wiz...nor (aparently) am I good at finding things on the internet. I did manage to find a burner program specificaly for burning ISO's which you have to have or at least a burner program capable of it. (aparently just copying the Iso to a cd will not work....which I learned the hard way after farting around with it for an interminably long time.) And I did manage to finally locate DSL which downloaded rather quickly and after burning it works (I think). But Only after giving up after an hour and a half for ubunto to get half way downloaded from Linux.com. WTF is a mirror anyways? Found the burner at puppyos.com it's small, simple enough even for a simpleton like me and free (which is always good.) Please note:There are those of us out here that aren't computer savy...and generally we're not all that good at navigating the WWW either...Hell I found Hypography by accident while looking for information on hypnosis why my browser thought Hypo was relevent is beyond me! DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 for that matter I just figured out today that I could change how this site displays on my pc....Nightshift is so much nicer to the eyes (well mine at least) than the default display I've been staring at since I joined here. alexander Posted December 3, 2007 Author Report Posted December 3, 2007 Disturbed, sorry bro, i didn't want to make it feel like it actually took me 23 seconds to donwload the cd, ptobably took me like an hour or so, 23 seconds is what it took me to find, copy and paste the link... PS nightshift is a little too light for me... i use my custom theme in stylish to further darken it  if you want a link to a really great piece of burning software.... Check out Infra Recorder found here: InfraRecorder » Downloads A Mirror by the way is a server that continuously updates it's content, copying it from the original server(s) and hosts it. So to lessen the load on Ubuntu servers, many supporters of the ubuntu project host their own mirrors (for free) so that more people can more easily download the product. Unfortunately Ubuntu folks did not build in integration for finding mirrors based on your location, but hey, they have a Distro to update and run and stuff  yes, once you download the image to your computer, all you need is a blank cd and a burning program, burn the Iso onto the cd (not as iso, so don't just drag and drop, go through menus and find the burn image or burn from image or burn iso something to that extent in the menu selection and point it to the iso... And as i said, i didn't mean to snap at you, it was just one of those days, and i had a wicked migrane... :phones: Friends? Quote
DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 N.P.:) I've got it and it works. Sadly however the hard drive on my beater is k-put...FUBAR....no read no write....Dmit!!!! Figures finally have a use for the 'ol POS and it decides not to work! Oh well HD's are pretty cheap as things go... I would install on this computer but I don't wish to risk screwing it up. (Sweetie would kill me!). :hihi::phones: Quote
