I finally went and did it two weeks ago, I got my eyes checked and got new glasses for the first time in over ten years. I stopped wearing my glasses at least six years ago when I found that I could see just as well with them on as off. But I have also notices a deterioration in my overall vision over the past couple of years, and I finally caved an got an exam.

The results: right eye = 20:100, left eye = 20:70, together = 20:60. Not good enough for a driver's license in Ohio. I also have an astigmatism in each eye that causes improper focusing of light against the retina. My brain is very accustomed to this distortion, so with my new glasses on suddenly the world looks like a fun house mirror. Everything is short and squat, and rectangles are trapezoids, narrow at the bottom. Of course after a few days this started to go away, but it is still there sometimes.

Now my corrected vision is better than 20:20, but not quite 20:15. Everything is so clear again! If only proportions were correct. I am still having trouble judging some distances and sizes, but it gets better every day. The eye doctor said it would get better in as few as a few minutes to as much as a couple of days. I am still working on it. My experimental nature has me twisting and turning my head and adjusting the angle through my glasses to observe the change it makes to my surroundings. It is quite fascinating.

I imagine others have gone through this experience, what was it like for you? How did you cope with the world of trapezoids?
