Tormod Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Okay, not quite sure where to post this but social science sounded good. Goats sacrificed to fix Nepal jet Nepal's state-run airline has confirmed that it sacrificed two goats to appease a Hindu god, following technical problems with one of its aircraft. BBC NEWS | South Asia | Goats sacrificed to fix Nepal jet Why do people say we have to *respect* other people's faith? Quote
yellow Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Wah ha ha wow.If I ever amuse myself with the delusion that civilization is gradually moving towards rational and objective, intelligent behavior, they always seem to remind me what simple, frightened and confused animals we are. Tradition does not justify ignorance. Quote
CraigD Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Why do people say we have to *respect* other people's faith? :DAw, c’mon, where’s everybody’s sense of scientific objectivity and cultural relativism? The latter, at least, is essential to anyone calling themselves a “social scientist”. ;) The question we should be asking is “did it work?” That is, do planes that have goats sacrificed to them have better service/safety records, etc. than ones that don’t. Does the number of goats sacrificed matter – if sacrificing 1 goat gets me 10,000 hrs MTBF, will sacrificing 100 get me 1,000,000? This speculation seems ludicrous, until one considers that many of the people maintaining and operating these planes believe the sacrifices work. Perhaps a mechanic inspecting or servicing a plane that’s had the proper rituals performed on it is extra diligent in his work – or, inversely, perhaps, believing the plane is aided by the supernatural, he’s slipshod, or doesn’t bother to work on it at all. Lets see some statistics from these goat-sacrificers! Quote

i am diffrent Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 The plane made it after the goats where sacrificed they must have pleased Akash Bhairab, I think we should do it more often. Sacrifice goats that we plan on eating to Akash Bhairab, Less plan crashes maybe :phones: Either way, the goats might be used for a couple of reasons then. Food and protection. Sounds good to me.
