Fishteacher73 Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 It seems that we constantly skirt around music but there has not really been a thread to talk about what you are listening to. Perhaps we could all trade some music info and find out about some new tunes?(Perhaps this thred should be in the "Books, Movies, and Games" section, but I thought I might throw it out here to see if we get anything started). Killean Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 The music I listen two depends on my current mood. Do I wish for a little peace, or am I in the mood for somthing lively. My first playlist consists of music from videogames (only the orchestrated pieces). Roughly 2/3's of the playlist are songs from Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy Series), the rest is from Koji Kondo (Legend of Zelda), Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) and Robert Beanland & Chris Marlow (Conker's Bad Fur Day). My second playlist for active days is comprised mostly of Classical Rock and Punk (One Techno Song). AC/DC, Deep Purple, Led Zeplin, Guns and Roses, Misfits, Offspring, Green Day, Chemical Brothers and our very own Tormod Guldvog. Quote
Fishteacher73 Posted January 25, 2005 Author Report Posted January 25, 2005 YEAH! I got some response so I guerss I'll go ahead and throw in some of my two cents worth. Again it depends on my mood (Probably it does for everyone): In a bad mood or angry: Punk... Dead Kennedys or the Buzzcocks (Many otheras but those two top my punk list). Hanging out: Indie...The true masters of this genre have got to be Pavement and Slint. These two bands helped shape of today. Reading or studying: Experimental Instrumental post-punk/ post-rock....Tortoise, Don Caballero, Godspeed You Black Emperor. Fabtastically complex, but very easy to be background to other things,... and on and on....... Quote

Have to agree.... They got started early on around Dallas...seen them play in little holes ion the wall. As for Country; I'll grant it is under-rated, but for older country. The new stuff is just twangy pop.. (And I'm not a fan of pop). Quote
Freethinker Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Er "LISTEN"? Ya as always I am going to cause problems! During the day I wake up to NPR and listen to it in the car. Music radio stations suck. lucky to get two decent songs in a row and seldom enough time to deal with a CD. At work, during the day, I stream AirAmerica. No local broadcast of it. http://www.airamericaradio.com (realplayer needed) or feed this straight into realplayer http://play.rbn.com/?url=airam/airam/live/live.rm&proto=rtsp At home, if I want noise in the background while doing other stuff, I stream various netradio stations from shoutcast. My favs are Freethought Radio (may be a contributing voice soon) or some of the far right fundies like first ammendment radio. Lots of laughs and they hate Bush almost more than me. But music holds a very special place for me. I seldom use it for background noise. I enjoy getting "into it" too much. When a good song hits, I want silence and will give it full attention. Well silence unless I want to sing or play along. And that is the next part. Quote

Freethinker Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 OK, since what seems to have been intended is not "listen" but "what music"? So I "listen" to vinyl. Current digital sources are vastly inferior to the musical reproduction vinyl offers. Vinyl is far more enjoyable to listen to. In fact when CD's were first coming out, physiological tests showed increases in heart rate and lower galvanomic skin resistances. All indicate INCREASE is stress levels. Don't know if those test results are on line or not. I will have to check. One was published in "Absolute Sound" in the '80's. If I am playing guitar or going to sing along, MP3's are easy to play (winamp play lists) and do the job. Sound bad, but get the job done. CD's sound better, but except in the car, or if not avail on vinyl, why stop half way? Top artists? Not in specific order Van Morrison (you've got to hear his relatively unknown " Too Long in Exile")StonesLed ZepplinCarlos SantanaBB KingStevie Ray VaughnHendrixClaptonPink FloydAllman BrosCreedPearl JamTen Years AfterBrian AugerOtis ReddingWilson PicketColtrainBuddy GuyMahavishnu OrchestraELOELPCSN (sometimes Y)Leonard CohenSteve MillerByrdsJanis JoplinLou Reed ("Sweet Jane Live" gives me goose bumps and I have to grab my "axe")Robert CrayAssociationBlack CrowsCounting (them also)Jackson Browne Well, that probably gives a good cross section. Freethinker Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 One expansion on the above. Perhaps SACD and DVD Audio have the technical ability (high enough sampling rate, bit depth) to compete with vinyl, but I have not had the chance to evaluate it yet. Quote

Was it possibly the music of the 80's that caused the stress? ;) I mean come on, how much Wham can anyone stand? Quote
