GAHD Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 I will check them out, thanks for the tip. Excellent, be shure to let me know what you think. Quote
Thelonious Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 I listen to jazz and musicals. My favorite jazz musicians and composers include John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Sonny Stitt, Herbie Hancock (after the 1980's and before the 2000's), et cetera... Oh yeah, how could I forget the Mahavishnu Orchestra? As far as musicals go, my favorites are pretty much all of the ones Andrew Lloyd Webber did with Tim Rice, most notable of which is Jesus Christ Superstar, although The Phantom of the Opera is not too bad. Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, and, of course, CANNIBAL: The Musical are also great. Was it possibly the music of the 80's that caused the stress? ;) I mean come on, how much Wham can anyone stand? I definitely think you are right about that. Quote
Freethinker Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Was it possibly the music of the 80's that caused the stress? ;) I mean come on, how much Wham can anyone stand?OK, just for the record (pun intended), the tests were usually done with the same source material available in both forms. And if it is short for "wham bam thank you mam", bring it on! :-) Quote
maddog Posted January 27, 2005 Report Posted January 27, 2005 My tastes are so varied the genres of what I hate is waayy smaller than what I like. I truly hat both opera and rap. I liken either sound to that of fingernails on chalkboard on a cold dry morningwhile I recovering from a bad hangover... :( What I like, I really like, however range is vast: Rock n'Roll, Blues, Classical, Jazz, Country, Hillbilly music, Techno... and so on. My all time favorite artist is Moody Blues (I've been likeing them since I was 14). Volunteers, Surrealistic Pillow, etc.Now that you remind me of my favorite all-time sleeper album Kanter/Slick is....... Baron von Toolbooth and the Chrome Nun.... Waay to Kewl. :( But to see V U, I put Lou on my list. In fact I was playing along to Sweet James Live Ya' I like Lou Reed as well. JJ Cale. Now that reminds also of Brian Ferry and Roxy Music, ==> don't know why... ? I think I saw Moody Blues 2 or three times: First right after Question of Balance was release, 2nd afterrelease of Long Distance Voyager. I vaguely remeber seeing them sometime out here in California somewhere. BTW, I am starting to like the Ted (..) and the Monsters <-- kinda' reminds of Howlin' Wolf. ;) Maddog Quote
Tormod Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Well...such long lists... I have no idea what I listen to. I listen to music all the time. I have an mp3 player with 20 gigs of music that is pulled from my CD collection which spans from the worst of the worst to the best of the best (like the great Van Morisson CD's Irish has sent me). I have a lot of classical and jazz albums but they tend to collect dust. But some names come to mind: Kent (excellent Swedish pop/rock band)Nils Petter Molvær (great Norwegian jazz/electronica trumpetist/composer!)Jan Garbarek (same, but on the saxophone)Dream Theater (John Petrucci is a fantastic guitar player)Steve Vai (Guitar God)Limp BizkitPeter GabrielPink FloydJohn Scofield (and JS Band)Bruce SpringsteenU2R.E.M.OrbitalAphex Twin ...and a lot of radio, er... Quote
maddog Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Tormod, Yeah, I like U2, Van Morrison (even his earlier band Them from the 60's), Chieftans (all Irish bands)... :) I also like Peter Gabriel (Genesis from which he came),I do like Steve Vai (though I don't to hear enough of him). I heard where a group was temporarily formed between Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and a third guitarist who Iforget --> called G3, I think. {was it Neil Schon... ?} Oh yah, I did forget R.E.M. Bummer! Of course I have over a 1000 or so CDs (I actually lost count) as my tastes are so vast. Maddog Quote
Freethinker Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 But I am more than...At least, I think I must be?Ya, I had to stop someplace... Perhaps more apripo to this site: This garden universe vibrates complete. Some we get a sound so sweet.Vibrations reach on up to become light,And then thru gamma, out of sight.Between the eyes and ears there lay,The sounds of color and the light of a sigh. And to hear the sun, what a thing to believe. But it's all around if we could but perceive. To know ultra-violet, infra-red and X-rays,Beauty to find in so many ways. Two notes of the chord, that's our fluoroscope. But to reach the chord is our lifes hope. And to name the chord is important to some.So they give a word, and the word is OM.Ya, I like Airplane as well, Against the wall M.... F.... I think I saw Moody Blues 2 or three times: First right after Question of Balance was release, 2nd after release of Long Distance Voyager. I vaguely remeber seeing them sometime out here in California somewhere.Saw them on tour the last time just a year or so ago. Quote
Freethinker Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 my CD collection which spans from the worst of the worst to the best of the best (like the great Van Morisson CD's Irish has sent me).OK, so which end does Van fit in? Remember, this could cost you both of us! :-) Quote
Freethinker Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 Of course I have over a 1000 or so CDs (I actually lost count) as my tastes are so vast.I am actually spending my efforts (and US$) to increase my vinyl collection. MP3's are that much worse than CD's. So I might as well go after the best source if I have to actually pay! Quote
IrishEyes Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 OK, so which end does Van fit in? Remember, this could cost you both of us! :-)Yeah, T... on this one, Freethinker and I are of like mind. No other place in this forum can we say that, but this is one area where we totally agree! Also, checked the Van site and no tour dates for May yet. Mostly he's going to be in Ireland/UK in March and April. I'll keep checking though. Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll actually be here in May... Quote

Turtle Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 I don't own/buy music, but yesterday I listened to the radio. Some Thelonius Monk & assorted other blues & then went to a classical station & listened to Schubert's unfinished symphony. I have an aversion to watching muscian's perform; I just want to listen. ;) Quote
Buffy Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and John Barleycorn just went back into my Camaro's CD changer...RIP Jim Capaldi.... I only got to see them live once when they opened for the Dead (it was the last time I saw Jerry play too), but they've always been a staple... Sniff,Buffy Quote
Tormod Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 I forgot to add some of my all-time favorites: Depeche ModeThe Cure (mostly the old stuff)Faith No MoreGeorge Michael (he's quite a genius in my eyes)Mark Knopfler (another guitar lengend)Sting (and mostly the Police and just-after-Police era) I recently also finally bought "So Red The Rose", an album from 1985 by Arcadia, a spin-off from Duran Duran. Great stuff for a sentimental 80s boy. Quote
IrishEyes Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Great stuff for a sentimental 80s boy. I knew we were kindred spirits :D My neighbor is always teasing me about being stuck in the 80s for music. That '1985' song that was popular a few months ago described me to a tee. I don'tknow who sings it, but I think they were camping outside my house when they wrote it. Quote
