freeztar Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 Inspired by the "Double positives and Double negatives" thread, I decided I needed to study redundancy as part of my educational needs. It will be fun and I know everyone will enjoy it in a fun-like manner. It's not intended to be serious so any seriousness should not be intended. ;) But seriously, to make this thread applicable to linguistics (rather than the watercooler), I suggest that we create the most clever examples of redundancy and attempt to analyze the context and psycholinguistics that precipitate. This will help make the thread more applicable to linguistics. Why do we use redundancy and why is it used? :P Quote
Buffy Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 My 11th-grade English teacher (thank you Mrs. Vessey!) always beat me up for *not* restating. Tell them what you're going to say, then say it, then tell them what you've just told them. Turned out to be *essential* for being good at PR! Alfred Hitchcock said, "There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it." So if you watch his movies, he always tells you what he's going to do and then he does it (well, sometimes he doesn't, and *that's* suspense!). Imagine the shower scene in Psycho where you don't have all the "Norman's eye view" before the murder... There's great value in repetition! Oh, we have 12 vacancies. 12 cabins, 12 vacancies, :PBuffy Quote
TheFaithfulStone Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 this. tfs actually, i guess that's self referential and not redundant isn't it? oh well. Quote
freeztar Posted October 18, 2007 Author Report Posted October 18, 2007 There's great value in repetition! I agree, but then there's the question of "Where does the value of repetition fade into the mundaneness of redundancy?". What separates the two? Quote
Qfwfq Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 I loathe repetition! Hate it! Just hate it! Absolutely hate it! I just really really really really hate it! Quote
freeztar Posted October 20, 2007 Author Report Posted October 20, 2007 But tell us how you really feel, Q? I think everyone would like a clarification. How do you feel about redundancy, specifically your feelings...about redundancy. Hate is relative, and relatively speaking, I hate hate. I wouldn't bring this up, but it bothers me. Hating hate seems arbitrary, and hate hating seems arbitrary, relatively speaking. Quote

Tormod Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 I would perhaps argue that without redundancy, it might (perhaps) be difficult to argue that redundancy is important in order to state something more than once (instead of, say, twice), without making it clear that it is the redundancy itself that is helping you repeat yourself for the purpose of making something clear. Qfwfq Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 That ain't redundancy, that's post padding! Nothing but post padding! Nothing else! No other thing! Only post padding! Nothing but redundant post padding! :phones: Quote
freeztar Posted October 25, 2007 Author Report Posted October 25, 2007 When I posted this topic, I was afraid some might take it that way. My concern was that people would construe this thread as a post-padding scheme. Nonetheless, even though I considered the possibility of being labeled a post-padder, I decided to go through with it, despite my hesitations. Quote

Qfwfq Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 What's Christmas pudding? Ive heard of black pudding, white pudding, chocolate pudding, steak and kidney pudding, rice pudding, Yorkshire pudding, Cheese pudding, corn pudding, Groaty pudding, bread and butter pudding, cabinet pudding, Carrot pudding, Cheshire pudding, cottage pudding, Indian pudding, fruit pudding, tapioca pudding, apple & barley pudding, never heard of Christmas pudding... Tormod Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Christmas pudding is, as far as I know, something they eat (in other words an edible entity to be consumed by means of the mouth) on Christmas Island. Quote
modest Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 redundant words - redundant prefixes - redundant suffixes - redundant letters - redundant syllables - most of the English language is redundant. “irregardless”Who is that word trying to fool? It stole another word’s definition and spelling - added a redundant prefix and thought nobody would notice. Yeah, we’re on to you! “geometrical” Dude, that geometric series is so geometrical man. “electronical”If I have an electric car, an electrical car, and an electronical car…. how many cars do I have exactly? “thievery”Did you see what thievery did? Thievery came along and STOLE theft’s definition!Yeah, thievery is in the dictionary - suspiciously close to the word theft. “truthfulness”Truthfully - Is there true truthfulness in a truthful truth? If truth is a noun, and truthful is an adjective, and truthfulness is a noun again,is truthfulness-ful an adjective again? Where does the insanity stop? We seriously need to stop adding bits and pieces to our words… because eventually they get written down in the dictionary and we’re all screwed. - modest PS - the only word that my spell checker didn’t like was electronical. I'm sure it will eventually be a common word. freeztar 1 Quote
