amidst Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 Hi, i have read with great interest on what tunneling microscopes are capable of doing. But what i cant find out is how the the hell that tip is made, and from what, it is claimed that the end of the tip has thickness of only one atom, an amazing achievment if i may say so. So does anybody know how it is made. Quote
Jay-qu Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 It depends on what the tip is made of. For a tungsten tips are made via electrochemical etching while platinum-iridium tips are made through mechanical shearing. Quote
wigglieverse Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 Apparently the first tips were made by smashing a diamond and poking through the result to find a bit with a single carbon atom for a tip... Quote
