paigetheoracle Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 In the theology section I bring up The Golden Compass because Philip Pullman deals with this, even if obliquely as does Anthony Peake in his cheatingtheferryman blogspot, although he calls it the daemon and doesn't specify animal form anymore than does Carlos Castenada in his Don Juan books but both talk of shapeshifting and this links to 'were' animals as in wolves or bears in Europe and Leopards and Jackals in Africa - at least in my opinion. I saw Sam Elliott interview with Charlie Rose yesterday, and Sam commented on the daemons. He said something to the effect that each person , via the daemon, have an analog animal body, that is, this is how the books represented it. Sam also discussed how the movie changed the ending and other specifics found in the books. Conditional on this films success, the other two books will get movies too. The Redwall series by Brian Jacques plays well on animal forms. :phones: Quote
Queso Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 I'd also like to add you probably shouldn't take calos castaneda seriously. He was inspired greatly by shamanism, but his words aren't true. His books were meant to be metaphorical. I recommend "the art of dreaming"so eloquent. Quote
freeztar Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Mine is Owl. Though, I just took an online test for the fun of it and it said Jaguar. :( Quote
CraigD Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Since experiencing a awe-inspiring and significant-seeming dream in my mid teens from the imagined perspective of this animal, mine has been an otter. Quote

Turtle Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 OkCupid! The Spirit Animal Test It's a dating service site! :D Here's my result...Spotty. ;) You are a Jaguar Spirit. You move like a predator, and enjoy the night. You are agile and graceful, and have amazing night vision. You tend to be solitary, but sometimes get along with one or two others. Jaguars are very wild spirits with strong wills. Certainly the test is bogus...er...biased , but it brings up the good question of whether someone can assign a power animal to another person. Perhaps within some specific shamanic culture where such namings are the norm, but otherwise I think it's more of a question to an individual about what animals they have an attachment for. Following that, I think Craig's example of giving the circumstance of his animal affinity gives the power animal, well, more power. Quote

As for my choice on Owl, it also has a significant story behind it like Craig's otter. I was walking back to my dormroom (back in 1996, at about 1:30AM) and as I was walking I was deep in thought and had my head down. I felt somebody, or at least what I thought was somebody, grab the hair on the back of my head. I whipped around in fight mode ready to engage my would-be attacker to find nobody there. I could have sworn that somebody was there because it felt like somebody had run up behind me and reached for me, but only managed to graze my hair. I turned back around in time to see a Great Horned Owl, with a wingspan of approximately 4.5ft., flying towards a nearby tree. It landed on a branch about 20 feet up and turned around to face me. I'll never forget that moment. We stared at each other for about 10-15 seconds and I asked it in my mind why it had done what it did (touch me). As soon as that thought went through my mind, it lept from the branch and made a dive bomb straight for my face. I was briefly in disbelief and stood there transfixed until it was closing in and I realized it was going to hit me. I "hit the deck" and started screaming and wailing my arms above my head. It flew on and I ran back to my dorm as fast as I could. I was still shaking when I got in my room.Years later I was talking with a survivalist school instructor and I told him the story. His eyes lit up and he told me that the owl was giving me a special blessing that is rarely bestowed to us humans from animals. He said the owl could have easily lacerated my head, but because it didn't, it was a touch/gift/blessing. He emphatically declared that the owl must be my spirit animal and gave me a book to read which described qualities of people with an owl spirit animal. It fit me well, but like astrology it seems too arbitrary. And that's the owl story. ;) Quote
