newspaper Posted November 24, 2007 Report Posted November 24, 2007 I was just wondering why is the sunlight called the electromagnetic radiation. I posted this on other science forum but got no satisfactory answers. MY friends even suggested me to look at some detail on quantum mechanics and told me to look on quantum nature. newspaper, Quote
Mohit Pandey Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 James Clerk Maxwell proposed that the phenomenon of light is an electromagnetic phenomenon. Maxwell showed that visible light forms only a small part of the entire spectrum of possible electromagnetic-radiation.Electromagnetic Radiation - MSN EncartaLight - MSN Encarta Quote

Thanks for the reply but Could you please elaborate your point please because i have been trying to graps this idea but could not find. Quote
GAHD Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 To try and get a metal image;-think of 'color' as an indication of excitement.-think of photons(light) like a bunch of buckshot flying through the air-all these photons are vibrating like a tuning fork, the red ones slower than the green and blue-depending on how fast the vibration is the particles either can or can't penetrate certain materials: IE x-rays blow right through you. help? It is difficult , if you don't read the given links. I gave that because it explains electromagnetic radiation without any technicalities. There is need to read it.Wiki contains too much technicality for you. :-)GAHD-To try and get a metal image;-think of 'color' as an indication of excitement.-think of photons(light) like a bunch of buckshot flying through the air-all these photons are vibrating like a tuning fork, the red ones slower than the green and blue-depending on how fast the vibration is the particles either can or can't penetrate certain materials: IE x-rays blow right through you.Can you explain red colour during sunset and sunrise and blue colour of sky using this mental image? Boerseun Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 Can you explain red colour during sunset and sunrise and blue colour of sky using this mental image?Sunsets and sunrises are red for the same reason the sky's blue. The air preferentially scatters blue light, but let red light pass through unmolested. At sunset, the sunlight has a longer path through the atmosphere to your eyeball. Hence, the sun looks redder, because much more blue light have been scattered on its path towards you.At noon, the sun looks almost white (with a slight tinge of yellow), because thats the time of day when the atmosphere between you and ol' sparky is the thinnest. This is due to the chemical make-up of the atmosphere, and also the principle upon which spectroscopes work. Quote
