zerothehero Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Ruminations and philosophies on the meaning of life.1) John Conway 3 Simple Rules and a plethora of life like objects. This model shows how emergence operates at a fundamental level. Scientists are looking for TOE and James Conway game of life shows why in a very simple way.2) Entropy. How time is one way due to the fact that ALL systems have a tendency to equilibrium in a CLOSED system. Entropy makes sense. Its common sense yet our very existence flies in the face of it's implications unless we don't live in a closed system (which we don't) but what about the universe?3) Patterns Every single atom in our bodies now will no longer exist in our bodies in 10 years time. What keeps the pattern of who we are? Think very carefully on this point. Take a door of your car the car is still there, take of the wheels etc etc etc at what point does the car no longer exist. So all the atoms in our body have been removed but YOU still exist. Clouds are just molecules of water that are reflected in your eyes that are produced by the mountains that cause hot air to rise. That’s why you see a cloud but the cloud is a constantly changing collection of water molecules NEVER the same cloud.. Just a pattern we impose.4) E=MCi2 or Energy = Mass x the Speed of Light x Information Squared. Everything can and will be reduced to data. Where is data the most fundamental aspect of existence on or off occupy in einsteins theory it doesn't. It must include information.5) Aliens. Do you believe in aliens? What a Theological question. The word believes spits in my face . Given the size of the universe isn't it just a fact that there exist other life forms or are we the pinnacle of creation. (Yeah right). Life is out there just not in our reach/neighbourhood.5) Chaos theory and Fractals or more to the point the Mandelbrot set. Here we have a very simple equation that is infinite in its scope and probably the most complex mathematical object we have FOUND and yet can be recreated by most programmers with a PC and simple formulae. James Conway strikes again. Information and its content.6) Quantum physics. The most successful theory of mankind yet the most troubling in its philosophical implications. Now scientist are looking at String Theory ( a mathematically beautiful system but no possibility of EVER being proven IS THIS SCIENCE ) 10 dimensions all folded up with vibrating branes and multidimensional existence of universes. Or what about the theory of evolution applied to universes.7) Boundaries. I like this. Give me a circle of pure white and a circle of pure black. Where is the maximum informational content? Not in the black or white circle but at the points where they intersect THE BOUNDARIES. See Mandelbrot. Life wasn't created in the oceans or on land but on the boundaries. We exist between the macrocosm and the microcosm. History is written not in capitols but on the frontiers.8) Where am I going with all this? What do I believe? We exist in a space that is being bombarded by information. We can SEE only 1% of the spectrum of light. We can HEAR only 1% of the spectrum of sound etc etc etc. We exist as points in space being bombarded by information that we process with our senses and expand with our imagination but ultimately we are data processing units.9) How to visualise the Fourth dimension? Use Flatland as an example a fourth dimensional thumb being stuck in our third dimensional plane. Easy yeah. But what about this: take away one dimension of our 3 dimensional plane and the whole of reality ceases to exist. You cannot reduce the 3rd dimension to just two or one. Think about it. These are just idealized planes of our imagination. 10) So why are we here. What is our purpose. Do we have one? My first post but what are we all looking for (excluding some omnipresent overlooking father figure of GOD) a meaning and reason. My reason . My Understanding. We exist as beings on the boundaries between the microcosm and the macrocosm as maximum informational processing beings that recreate the most complex mathematical objects in phase space just by our existence. CraigD Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 Ruminations and philosophies on the meaning of life. …As with your ideas in 13547, take these and start a thread or three in the appropriate forum. The introduction forum is for just that – saying “hey”, and sharing whatever non-topic-specific information about yourself you think might enhance your hypography experience. The “forum index” link on the big bar at the top of the page lists all the forums. As with any objective discussion, it’s usually best to narrow a particular post to a single question or topic, and avoid framing discussions with questions like “is <natural language statement> right or wrong?” It’s also a good idea to become proficient in using the advanced search to see what threads already exists for a given topic – for example, your “Ship of Theseus” question is a pretty old (well, by all accounts prehistoric  ) subject – and join in or revive these thread rather than rehashing the same basic discussion in a near duplicate new thread. zerothehero Posted December 4, 2007 Author Report Posted December 4, 2007 Thanks for the advice and constructive criticism. It was late at night when I found this forum and didn't really read the info. (Then again who reads instruction manuals). Quote
