Finrod Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Greetings from sunny Lancashire. I've registered here after carefully reading Hilton Ratcliffe's 'Newtonian Mechanics' thread. And boy, did that take some time. Scientist, educator, carer, paperfolder. That's enough of a description for now. I've used the name Finrod because it basically stops me getting confused. My real name is Ian, should anyone have occasion to use it. Quote
Queso Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 welcome Ian. glad to have you on board. Quote
Finrod Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 Thank you, orbsycli. I don't think I've ever communicated with a resident arachnid before. With regard to your 'Rome falls nine times an hour,' you may find pleasure in the anagram: Rome wasn't built in a day --but Italians may wonder! Queso 1 Quote
Symbology Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Scientist, educator, carer, paperfolder. That's enough of a description for now. Origami? I am finding this hobby a curious synchronicity in the last year. Many scientists seem to have this as a hobby, in a similar way that many computer scientists are also musicians. My interest was sparked when I began to hear about the new program that helps to calculate the mysteries of protein folding. My belief is that some day the wisdom or origami may help solve some of these issue in the similar way Miura map folds have helped the space program in folding solar panel wings. To my observation the non-intuitive thing that is the magic trick of origami is in making a fold in one direction and then using the crease to fold it back in the other direction for the final result. It seems to create all the "hidden" magical aspects. Which reminds me of hashing algorithms in computer science. We are able to "hide" numbers in the same way to be later retrieved at the perfect moment. Anyway welcome to Hypography! I am a relative newbie myself. I hope you find it as enjoyable and enlightening as I have. Quote
