Meredith Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 Not sure if this is the dumbest question ever asked...But I just gotta know.Recently I have noticed objects (all if different areas of the home) in my home becoming magnetic... For instance - A fridge that never (well once a year) gets turned on can have metallic objects stuck to the inside and outside of the freezer door. I am not sure if it is the fridge or all the metal bits or both that are magnetic... I had to change a screw the other day and noticed that both the screw and the screw driver were magnetic. I have shown my son how to make a magnet but I am pretty sure he hasn't randomly picked items to turn into magnets to puzzle his mum. Is there a simple answer to this and more importantly should we *get OUT* (Sorry for the Poltergeist reference but I am kind of waiting for the chairs to start moving on their own). Not sure if it helps but our house does short out a lot and I have noticed that on the DVD player and aerial of second telly give off little buzzy shocks when you touch them... (sounds drastic typing that). Thanks in advance for any ideas.CheersMeredith Quote
Drum Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 Not sure if this is the dumbest question ever asked...But I just gotta know.Recently I have noticed objects (all if different areas of the home) in my home becoming magnetic... For instance - A fridge that never (well once a year) gets turned on can have metallic objects stuck to the inside and outside of the freezer door. I am not sure if it is the fridge or all the metal bits or both that are magnetic... Take the bits of metal that stick to the fridge and see if they stick to the washing machine ... my guess is that they are magnetic I had to change a screw the other day and noticed that both the screw and the screw driver were magnetic. This is normal. All screwdrivers become magnetic with use .. even if the manufacturer hasn't made them so .. which they often do. Is there a simple answer to this and more importantly should we *get OUT* (Sorry for the Poltergeist reference but I am kind of waiting for the chairs to start moving on their own). So far you have no problems Not sure if it helps but our house does short out a lot and I have noticed that on the DVD player and aerial of second telly give off little buzzy shocks when you touch them... (sounds drastic typing that). This is most likely static electricity ... common and harmless .. occurs especially on dry days. Can be exacerbated depending on what your carpet and shoes are made of .. but still harmless As to the shorting out ... I am an electrician and most ... nearly all .. shorts are caused by faulty equipment ... rarely in the wiring. I don't think you have any problems at all ... rest easy ... If you are still concerned get an electrician to check your main earth connection to the earth stake. This is a stake driven into the ground for about 2 metres. It will be somewhere close to your main switchboard and should have a 4mm or 6mm green and yellow wire attached. If this wire is not attached then you have a problem ... get an electrician straight away. However I doubt if this is the issue. There is no such thing as Poltergeists, but more importantly, and if you don't have already .. you should fit an Earth Leakage device to your main switchboard. If your house is new you will already have one ... otherwise they are around $A150.00 to supply and fit .. These are Shunt-Trip devices and work in milliseconds to isolate the power should you receive a shock .. Even if you stick your finger into the powerpoint, the residual shunt trip will sense the active - neutral imbalance and shut off the power long before you even begin to feel it. cool bananas ... and have a good chrissy ...
