Santa Claus is the English corruption of the Dutch Sinterclaas, which is a corruption of Saint Nicholas, the 4th Century Turkish bishop. The Dutch settled in New York and Pennsylvania in the 1700's. English colonists did not celebrate Christmas as it was outlawed in 1659 by the Puritans in Boston. Slowly Christmas began to be celebrated in the colonies and later in the US. In 1822 Clement Clark Moore, a minister, wrote his classic story,"A Visit From Saint Nicholas". In 1863 Thomas Nast, a cartoonist for Harpers Weekly, drew what turned out to be our Santa Claus. There are other influences, especially from Norse legends, that contribute to the Santa Claus myth. Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer is a 1937 Montgomery Ward sponsored book used to sell more merchandise. However, reindeer are from the Norse influences.

You might be able to argue about whether or not Jesus was a myth: with Him you have to "believe."

On the other hand, I saw Santa at the mall last week, and I even sat in his lap.

Myth, shmyth....

When you argue with reality, you lose - but only 100% of the time, :)

You know you are a geek when you skip the innuendo and go straight to wondering why the bat and seesaw are not in synch with each other. It'd be so much cooler! :P

Oh sorry, wrong thread...

More on-topic (I try sometimes), my sister-in-law's family was apparently obsessed with Santa Tracker this year which seemed a bit odd to me seeing that the youngest child is 19. :)

At least it's good to know that the cold war brought something good to children through NORAD.

More critical thinkers, certain reality, and whirled peas...

Like a one-eyed Cheshire, like a diamond-eye jack. :)
