Racoon Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 Think the special effects in the Pirates of the Carribean 3 were pretty cool? I had no idea how incredibly sophisticated they were. The fluid motion of Earths most important resource, water, is incredibly difficult to put into an equation.... the Navier-Stokes equation. Discuss :confused::) Navier-Stokes Equations in Fluid Mechanics Navier-Stokes Equations -- from Eric Weisstein's World of PhysicsThe Navier-Stokes equations are the fundamental partial differentials equations that describe the flow of incompressible fluids. Using the rate of stress and rate of strain tensors, it can be shown that the components of a viscous force F in a nonrotating frame are given by Quote

Discuss :shrug::) Yeah fluid mechanics is a difficult subject at the best of times but so are a lot of things, like seventh order wave equations you need to start at a lower level and build up. arkain101 Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 You may also find this "pretty cool". Millenium Prize Problems Navier-Stokes Equation Waves follow our boat as we meander across the lake, and turbulent air currents follow our flight in a modern jet. Mathematicians and physicists believe that an explanation for and the prediction of both the breeze and the turbulence can be found through an understanding of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. Although these equations were written down in the 19th Century, our understanding of them remains minimal. The challenge is to make substantial progress toward a mathematical theory which will unlock the secrets hidden in the Navier-Stokes equations. Clay Mathematics Institute As I understand it, the maths work and stuff like this, but it has been almost impossible to explain why...? I am not sure, it is just something I recall vaguely Quote
