Buffy Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 C'mon, we're all nerds here! B) So how many electronic calculators do you have? You can count the one in your cellphone or your microwave oven, but NOT the one on your computer, and we're not counting copies of Excel or Open Office that you have. My daughter asked for one last night, and there were three within her reach without even getting up! Kids today! :car: I would calculate 14.87 minutes, Mr. Scott, :eplane:Buffy Quote
DougF Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Well I have 6 calculators, although only 4 are in working condition.3 of witch I use on a regular bases, the 3 I don't use are very old now and I cant seem to through them out, I just have them sitting on a shelf with some old school books that I cant seem to through.........B) Quote
CraigD Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 I went with 1-5. Though I’m untidy enough that I can with certainty say what might be lurking in cluttered drawers or dusty shelves somewhere, My household doesn’t appear to have any true, single-purpose, hard-programmed calculators. I had a couple of promotional clock/calculators (pretty flip-open things with product & company branding), but trashed them in a recent home de-cluttering. So, as best I can tell, the closest thing I have to an ordinary electronic calculator is one in little plastic cash register in a silly kids boardgame, and the ones in my and my spouse’s cellphones and PDAs. I’m not sure from the poll instructionsYou can count the one in your cellphone or your microwave oven, but NOT the one on your computer, and we're not counting copies of Excel or Open Office that you have.if the ones on the PDAs should count (or for that matter the cellphones, which are as much little general-purpose computers as our PDAs), but regardless, I count 1-5 of ‘em. I’m over 5 if I count the multiple calculators on my PDA. It would take me a while to get a reasonable estimate of the number of software calculators scattered among the various computers I “touch” daily, restricting the count just to the ones I’ve personally written. freeztar Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 I've got 2. An old HP graphing calculator from my school daze and the one on my cell. I really don't see the need for a hardwired calculator when I can hit ctrl-alt-C and bring up the windows calculator. I don't do any graphing these days, so it suits me just fine. Quote
C1ay Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 I've got about 3 plus 3 or 4 slide rules. I usually just use one of the PCs or laptops anymore if I can't work it out in my head.... Quote
Racoon Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 3, if you count my brain as a powerful calculator. 1 run-of-the-mill cheap simple function Made-in-Taiwan.1 expensive graphing. Texas Instruments. I still have a couple math classes I need to take. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Let's see. I'm not counting me personally, but rather, all the calculators in my houseadd up to:-4 cell phone calculators-1 BlackBerry calculator-2 Texas instrument graphing calculators-A couple random calculators that my family has amassed over the years (but we don't really use) Quote
Buffy Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 We've found 17 so far. Being a marketing maven, I have to admit that all except the cell phones and a Brookstone gift to my daughter that lights up in all sorts of pretty colors, were obtained from trade shows or various vendors who gave them away for free. I have an abacus somewhere that I've never used, and no slide rules. I went into computers of course because I can't do any math in my head! Poll clarification: yes, PDAs count, because in my book, they're *not* "real" computers (even if you have a MS-WinPDA thingy with Excel: toys!)... Base 8 is the same as base 10, really...if you're missing two fingers, :shrug:Buffy Quote
Buffy Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 1...and that friends is *real* 1821.... The more minimal the art, the more maximum the explanation, Buffy Quote
DougF Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Turtle Re: How many calculators do you own? 1 well you only need one (at any given time) Quote
DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 All apologies..I'm not reeeeallly Mr. Spock. (Duuuuuuuuuuh!:D)But I do not nor do I ever have the intention of ever owning a calculator. I tried to use one once.....their tricky..... It's so much easier to just run the numbers in my head (my co-workers love it when I do this...I think they find the random incoherent mumbling entertaining...I think he's lost it!!) or when needed break out the ol' pen and notebook (which are always in my pocket and quite handy) Why no pen and paper option?:eek_big: Quote
Jet2 Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 In my collection, I love this one the most. Simply because it's very basic and, well, really easy to use... 1221 Shots: [Great Numbers] (Sorry about this for I still haven't figured out how to insert a photo here :cup:) And also here's another one I got from a Google search.Seems like it's quite useful too. Online Basic calculator, Scientific, simple calculater, addition to percentage. Enjoy Geeks! :fly: Quote
DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Why no pen and paper option?:eek2: Seriously. Why no toes option either?!? Quote
freeztar Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 none. What about your computer? :hihi: Quote
alexander Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Hey Buffy, so what if i have 5 calculators on my computer, that are calculators, and not word/excell or reapeats of themselves. Like i have an RPN calc on my computer, BC, stock mac calculator, calculators i have written, etc? What if i commonly use google for calculating quick things if they are more complex then simple addition, subtraction, multiplication or division and i need precise answer, or to check myself...? Also if i have 2 calculators on my phone, do both of them count? lastly, do i also count calculators on my MP3 player? how about calculating abilities of devices for which calculation was not the intended use? both of my graphers and all other calculating devices i have and never use because i do most calculations in my head? Also disappointed with the absence of pen/paper... And i leave you with one of my personal discoveries that not that many people that i have met are aware about. I dont know if it's documented anywhere either, i stumbled upon this a few years ago. Most of the self shut off calculators (with no off button), most of you simple (emphasize simple!) desk top calculators, can still be shut off at your leisurely convenience, try the following hold down 1,2,3,+,(= - not so sure, try it with and without it) and while holding all those, tap, or hold for a couple of seconds on/ce. I know that some solar calculators do not turn off using this, but it used to work on most of the calculators i tested it with a few years back, even some with the off button (this is just more leet looking then pressing the off button...)
