MarilynHooiman Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 I am new to this site and blogging, however I am also now addicted! Laugh all you want but there are some of us old-timers that are just finding out about the wonders of computers! I am trying to learn all I can about DNA testing, uses and controversies AND MOST OF ALL THE POSSIBILITIES! Quote
Jet2 Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Dear MarilynHooiman, I think everybody needs to keep learning no matter how old he or she is. And I believe there will be no one laugh at anybody here at Hypography. We all love learning! Welcome aboard and have fun! Jet2, the not-so-old-timer who is always wondering many things including computer, DNA and blogging. :) Quote
CraigD Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Welcome, Marilyn! Though I’m not a molecular biologist, I like to think of myself as a member of the DNA generation – I was born in 1960, only a few years after the enunciation of the central dogma of molecular biology, a time when only a few specialists and strong generalists knew of DNA. By the time I could read biology with a reasonable level of understanding, nearly every decently educated person knew of it. My parents had a hardback copy of “The Double Helix”, and I cannot recall a time before the central dogma. I expect you’ll find hypography a great place to discuss the possibilities enabled by present day and future molecular biology, along with its practical technology and inevitable controversy.Laugh all you want but there are some of us old-timers that are just finding out about the wonders of computers!I’ve been a computer professional almost as long as there have been computer professionals, well long enough to know better than to laugh at people with less computer experience than myself – computers are, in the large, tools, and as with any tools, how much you know about them is usually less important than what you can make with them. :) Quote
Symbology Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 I am new to this site and blogging, however I am also now addicted! Laugh all you want but there are some of us old-timers that are just finding out about the wonders of computers! I am trying to learn all I can about DNA testing, uses and controversies AND MOST OF ALL THE POSSIBILITIES! Welcome Marilyn! My brother is an M.D. who uses circuit boards which can detect any of about 30,000 genomes from a dna sample placed on a specific part of the circuit board. They currently cost about $1,600 per test so they use them sparingly but can give them tremendous insight when they do. Quote
