Ahmabeliever Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Greetings! I am Ahmabeliever. Why did I choose this username? I'm here to learn more about Terra Preta. I believe this stuff is the magic bullet for healing land - the wealth of evidence is staggering - and having run some minimal experiments myself I am ready to learn all I can so I can help other people switch to organic practises while maintaining/improving production and reducing waste. I'm a new convert to organics myself. I have a few years in Aquaponics and the bacterial/biology learning curve led me to organic forums, and then, Terra Preta. I want to see a portable unit, something a farmer can make or afford, that takes farm waste and turns it into bio-char and hydrogen fuel. I don't accept the word can't. Unless it is followed by ...yet. I don't think this should get in the hands of corporations at all. I think it should be many small guys with the educational tools to do it themselves and in turn empower themselves and the farmers in their region. Why can't we power ourselves, feed ourselves, be independant of badly grown food and expensive services from sources that pollute and profit. For many - it seems daunting, a learning curve they can't climb, through time restraints or simply pressure to perform and feed the family, they can't afford to experiment and study, but I can. I have a rough idea how I can do this and am here for some help, advice, guidance, critique, and of course the company of like minded folk. I'll be in the TP forums outlining the basic idea. Nice to meet y'all. :) Quote
alexander Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Nice post, though you need 10 posts to be able to make a thread, i am sure that with your wealth of knowledge, you will be a good addition to the community :) Welcome to Hypography, the only place you know where it is known that the production of terra preta is not very possible without a helping hand, or in this case helping mouth of pontoscolex corethrurus. ;) whoever said girly-colored (pink) creatures can't be cool? freeztar Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Welcome Ahmabeliever! :) I kind of figured the name was from The Monkey's song. I too am a fan of char and look forward to your contributions. There is an enormous amount of info here on TP. Have fun! Quote

Ahmabeliever Posted March 7, 2008 Author Report Posted March 7, 2008 Monkees Song? OK you got me. I watched a Monkees documentary only last week and the songs are stuck in my head now. That's two posts. I reckon the first thing I need to do is get a lot of bricks and start laying out the base of a stove. The outer layer, a gap, an inner layer. I want to have the air well warmed up by the time it hits the fire via travelling through the (sides of) the oven to get to the fire. 8 more posts, then, no pictures, hehe, I hope you folk can visualise hehe. Plenty of reading to do yet, aww, and I wanted to theorise! Quote
Essay Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 Welcome Ahma,Best of Luck: ~SA I reckon the first thing I need to do is get a lot of bricks and start laying out the base of a stove. The outer layer, a gap, an inner layer. I want to have the air well warmed up by the time it hits the fire via travelling through the (sides of) the oven to get to the fire. I've recently run across some Appalachian folk-wisdom/stories about making charcoal. There's lots of talk about making a kiln (large, walk-in); but this is for commercial charcoal, not the low-temp. stuff needed for TP. If I run into any tips though, I'll start a thread about it. ...but kiln technology may be a helpful/inspirational resource anyway. :( Quote
Michaelangelica Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 Greetings! I'm here to learn more about Terra Preta. I believe this stuff is the magic bullet for healing land - the wealth of evidence is staggering having just replied and read your post at the TP sub forum I see you have thought long and hard about TP-an help other people switch to organic practises while maintaining/improving production and reducing waste.Check out the Organic Gardening thread which started as a question and ended as aresouce of info for organic gardeners/farmers. Aquaponics and the bacterial/biology learning Can you teach me how to make agar from my own home grown agar rich algae? (see my recent posts)I wonder what sort of algae grows in the Amazon River?I want to see a portable unit, something a farmer can make or afford, that takes farm waste and turns it into bio-char and hydrogen fuel. I don't accept the word can't. Unless it is followed by ...yet.Put me down for oneThe Canadians have one on a trailer I will see if I can track down a reference to it. They tell me there are alot of health and safety rules here that mitigate use in suburbia. I don't think this should get in the hands of corporations at all. I think it should be many small guys with the educational tools to do it themselves and in turn empower themselves and the farmers in their region.Yes I just found out yesterday that gardening is being considered a "subversive activity" Now all we need is for some one to ban it and it will florish and get away from the Granny and Mr Mac Greggor image. to experiment and study, but I can.I am blessed with time but no dollars I have a rough idea how I can do this and am here for some help, advice, guidance, critique, and of course the company of like minded folk. You will find it here. There is as trong TP contingent at Hypography and all sorts of other scientists to call on for help when we get stuck. Nice to meet y'all. :(Nice to meet you too. I am sure you will be an asset to theses forums. You alrady have your first rep. Quote

I doubt very much TP production hinges on this species. I have none of these worms and excellent TP type soil. With lots of other worms in it.... Quote
